Yes, it makes the chair Taller. The original Herman Miller cylinder sit about 2 inches past the wheel base. The heavy duty cylinder sold here sits taller as it doesn’t go past the base. Hope this helps!

How can you tell how old the chair is (if it is between 1996 and 2012)?

Check the serial number and or Part numbers on the chair. Call the manufacturer my chair was a Herman Miller chair and they were able to tell me when it was sold to me and that I had a 10-year warranty... S0 the numbers on the chair sometimes indicate MFG year. Good Luck
