Q: What size socket does the nut need to be tightened with?

It's a big ol' nut. I used a big crescent wrench. I would guess about 35 mm, but not 100% sure.

Q: Does anyone know if this has a a hole in the shank for the safety pin?

No hole in the threaded section.

Q: Will the 1" diameter shank fit inside a hitch with a 1" diameter hole, or does the hole need to be bigger, e.g., 1-1/8", or 1-1/4"?
