PENGUIN Who Was Walt Disney?

These books are growing on me now that I’ve used a few for guided reading. The topics stand out, though they are very US-centric. It gives the young reader but also the parent insight in a famous character’s life, social condition s from long ago and issues he or she was facing. The storyline and explanations are very clear. The lettering was a little large as well, so it is probably for readers in the 7- to 8 -year age range. However there are difficult word and concepts in it so it might be more suitable for 9 to 11 aged readers. I really appreciate the 2-pagers that are provided through out these books that dig into a specific topic or person - these in particular were a source for excellent discussions. This book about Disney takes you though Walt Disney’s lif.e How he started as a newspaper boy , his entry in Hollywood, his family life and the entertainment parks. Side topics that are being addressed are Charlie Chaplin, Pearl Harbour (!) and the making of animation movies. The thing I continue to struggle with in this series is the presentation. The book has a colourful soft cover however the illustrations inside the book are plain black and white drawings, that I could have made myself and that are simply not too inspiring. If I purely compare this on price and presentation to for example with the super well-presented Usborne famous lives books for young readers, then these would lose out.

Brilliant way of convincing your child that non-fiction books can actually be interesting and biography doesn't have to be boring.

simple but unimpressive
I bought this book hoping for a simple book on Walt Disney, It was this but very boring to look at, no colour, black and white pictures etc. However for the price it is perhaps what to expect. Would not recommend if you like a book with some character.
