Spot-on, but....
I am really torn about whether I like this book or not. I'm really leaning more towards loving it than hating it, but I wanted to lay both sides out in my review. What I love:Everything in this book is spot on. The message is biblical, sound, and everything I needed to hear.Chapters 5-10 gave specific examples for how to handle all sorts of different situations with both younger and older boys. This was the most helpful part of the book for me. And I will probably reference it again and again. What I didn't love:How could I not love a book that was spot on and just what I needed? It was mainly the writing style. I felt like the author was talking down to moms as if we couldn't understand the need of our sons to be respected. Which was in fact the entire reason I wanted to read this book. I knew my boys needed respect, I just don't always know how to flesh it out. After reading just two chapters of this book I was ready to toss it out. I remember telling my husband that for an author who made such great points, he didn't know much about communicating. I felt put down. Some of the ways he recommended using "respect-talk" towards our sons would have had my 13-year old thinking I was mocking him. However, after pressing on, it got much, much better. The other thing I didn't really care for was all of the success stories. I get that his system works and he knows what he's talking about, but I really felt like the first 4 chapters (and maybe the last 4) were mainly stories of how awesome the respect effect is, but not really helpful to the reader.Bottom line:If you have read books by Emerson Eggerichs before and enjoyed them, I would highly recommend this one.If you haven't read any of his books before, I would still recommend reading this book, but if you are put off by the beginning, maybe start at chapter 5. It's totally worth it.

Know your audience!
Not that I have anything against religion, but I felt like I am listening to a pastor who is breaching to unintelligent group of women. I am not Christian so I found his consistent reference to the Bible confusing (no offense to the Bible or Christianity). Also, the text is very repetitive that it sounds like a student miserably attempting to reach the word count on an assignment. Finally, I personally found the tone to be very condescending to mothers as it seems like he is blaming us for the struggles we are facing with our sons. He says that he is not blaming the mothers, but the language he is using certainly says it.

Helpful with older son
Our 25 yr. old son recently moved back home after job loss and change of career path. We had always had great relationship, but suddenly I was the enemy. This book was a true God send at a time when I was at a complete loss. It has helped diffuse a difficult circumstance just by way I approach him. I highly recommend for all ages. It's a process to rewire your language but I'm working on it. It works.

This works!!!!
Your book is an answer to prayer! I am a single mom that adopted a sibling group. I have two boys, ages 11 and 8, and their 6 year old sister. They have been with me for almost 7 years. My oldest son remembers the abuse and neglect he experienced with his bio mom and struggles with issues related to love and trust, much less respect. The issues discussed in your book have revolutionized how I related to both of my boys as well as how I now demand their sister to treat them.I listened to your book in the car to and from work, approximately an hour drive each way. Before I left work one day when I was halfway through your book, I checked by 6th grade son's grades. I noticed he had a 65% in math, a subject he enjoys, as a result of 2 zeros. I was livid and knew exactly what barrage of anger I would unleash on him when I got home. During the hour drive in which I processed your words about respect talk, I was able to completely change my approach. When I got home, I told my son that I respect his intelligence and ability in math. I was able to use respect talk to instruct, discipline, and encourage him. He respectfully responded that he would take care of the problem. No yelling, no tears, no regret! He turned in both assignments the next day and the grade became a 95%. I shared how proud I was of him for taking care of this and being a man of honor.Another quick story: The day I finished your book, I was telling my neighbor (she has a 7 year old son) about how great your book is while we were outside watching our kids play ball. My 8 year old son walked up to me and said, "I don't feel respected when 'my sister' takes the ball from me. Can you talk to her?" I asked my daughter if she was being respectful to her brother and she said no. She apologized to my son and promised to be respectful as they played. He said, "Thank you, you are a good sister." My neighbor's jaw dropped as she watched this interaction play out. I am telling you the truth, it happened just like that. My neighbor said,"I am buying this book tonight!"Thank you so much for answering the call God placed on your heart to write this book. As a single mom, I am so happy to have a "how to" guide on how to raise my sons as I try to teach them about THE SON. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

happy
It was a thought provoking book about parenting boys but also an interesting approach to conscious interactions with both sexes of all ages. I'm not sure if I agreed with it completely or if I was comfortable with the broad and encompassing statements but it was interesting and caused me to analyze my own parenting style and so was helpful. Also, it was in excellent condition and promptly delivered.
