Here's the thing about studded tires - they're heavy as a bag of rocks, inefficient for gaining and maintaining speed, noisy, and expensive.But they do one thing well, and that is saving you from falls in the event that you are cycling over ice. On my last winter, and the first winter after using studded tires over thick threaded mountain bike tires, I can count at least two occasions, potentially three, where I was grateful for these tires.I may consider returning to regular rubber in the future, as the speed/energy penalty of these tires is truly atrocious, but despite their slowness and noisiness and their price, these tires give you a big boost in confidence. You can be fearless heading out in any conditions without second guessing whether that puddle might be a patch of black ice. There's nothing quite like that reassuring feeling of security.The plus variant of these tires has extra studs along the edges of the tire, which purportedly increases turning stability. As a rule, winter riding has taught me the harsh lesson not to corner at speeds that cause you to bank, particularly in deep or hard packed snow, and these tires won't really save you from slippery snow. But if you want to taunt those evil patches of black ice pretending to be harmless puddles, those extra studs have you covered.I have yet to replace or repair any studs yet, which I assume will be necessary after 2-3 winters.
