Product Description Bill Maher: Be More Cynical (DVD)Bill Maher, creator of the immensely popular late-night talk show Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and host of the HBO hit series Real Time with Bill Maher, displays his celebrated, biting wit in the HBO Comedy Special, Bill Maher: Be More Cynical. Doing what he loves most, stand-up comedy, Maher rips through a horde of contemporary topics, from the evils of big government to the bewildering power women have over men, and delivers a landmark performance that re-affirms why he is one of today's brightest and most revered comedians.]]> .com The wit and wisdom of Bill Maher are on display in this hour-long performance, recorded in San Francisco in 2000. Of course, just how witty and wise Maher appears will depend on one's socio-political stance. Outspoken if not outrageously controversial (this gig preceded his infamous remark on his Politically Incorrect show that the 9/11 hijackers were "not cowardly"), Maher espouses views on sex, the war on drugs, religion, and other popular (and, let's face it, easy) targets that are unlikely to endear him to, say, residents of most "red states." Still, there is one opinion that this self-proclaimed Libertarian and his conservative counterparts might well share--namely, that big government is decidedly not a beautiful thing. Indeed, Maher's point is that we need to "be more cynical" not for its own sake, but so that we might avoid being duped by the real cynics out there, like those in Congress who sue Big Tobacco even as they line their own pockets with campaign contributions from those same companies. Elsewhere, although Maher doesn't specialize in one-liners, he does have some good lines: Princess Diana was "a lovely housewife who did some charity work"; when it comes to being faithful in a relationship, "men are only as loyal as their options"; those who claim to comprehend God's will really only "understand God as your dog understands you." The main problem with some of this material is that it's dated; taking shots at George W. Bush before he was elected for the first time isn't exactly fresh years after the fact. --Sam Graham

You've got to admire the honesty; I love this man.....
Bill Maher, the timid observer, always has something to say about politics and society.I was always amazed by how obvious his observations were, and how blind people choose to be.True, be more cynical is few years old, but it is as funny and accurate as "The Decider".Finally some body agrees with me on the big deal made over Clinton's scandal, Lady Diana's image, Al Gore, Reagan, and Bush junior, especially junior. Listen to Bill's observations about advertisement, drugs, republicans, death, religion (how religions are manipulated by people and how faith in God doesn't necessarily lead you to religion), aging (menopause = men on pause), the protected classes and their double standards (especially women), Barbie and Ken (Ken comes separately), and the male agenda "men are as loyal as their options, women should stop complaining about men until they develop better taste in them.....".I especially enjoy how Bill reacts when some audience rudely interrupts him, I actually wish for that to happen. I just love how witty and ready Bill is; even Medusa might not keep up with him. When Maher refers to Clinton's levels of lies, it finally occurred to me why people like Maher don't choose politics; they simply can't lie. I believe the world would be much better if more clean minds like Maher existed.

Not His Best, and Dated
-This program was filmed by HBO in the Fall of 2000. Because much of Maher's humor is political, there's a lot of dated material, which is fine with me because I agree with most of his opinons (especially about the Boy Idiot, George W. Bush) but you may feel differently. As the program went on, I thought "This man is clearly a Libertarian," a fact which he specifically affirmed later in the program. Since I tend to share many (but not all) Libertarian opinions, that fact didn't bother me, but it may bother others. We watched this program in tandem with several featuring Robin Williams. Maher doesn't match up to Williams, but then, who does?

Bill Maher At His Cynical Best
No extras with this DVD, just the straight 60 + minute show. Encores or Q & A after as in another of his show DVDs would have been nice. Still if you are a fan, as I am, you'll like this. If you think he's the devil's partner, you'll still think that after watching. As he says, he's not out there to convert his enemies, he mostly is talking to people who already know where he is coming from & enjoy his take on religion, men, guns, tobacco & politics..Enjoy, watch & enjoy
