The SMT / FE crossover that never was.
Sometime in 2013, Nintendo announced that Atlus and Inteligent systems will join forces to make a game mixing up raits from SMT and FE. At some point, Inteligent systems lost interest in the project and left the game development all to Atlus. The result was Tokyo Mirage Sessions. BAsically a Persona-like game with idols and some FE references and nods thown in there. As far as the game itself goes, this is an Atlus RPG 1000%. We get to play some sequences in the "real world" in Tokyo and others in dungeosn which exist in a different dimession. Battles are SMT/Persona battles with a twist of adding chain attacks (which are fun to perform). Your spells are the ones you know like Zio, Bufu, Agi, ect. The game progresses in chapters and you become stronger by leveling up in the dungeon and upgrading your Mirages/weapons and skills with materials optained in said dungeons. This may may have tunred out differently than what everybody expected, but it is a high quality JRPG. One that was lost in Wii U pulgatory, but not for long (now only XCX needs to be liberated, lol).If you are into JRPGs, Atlus RPGs and fun and dynamic turned based battles, this game is for you.

I love this game!
First, the seller was great. Prompt and everything in excellent order. Secondly I love this game. I feel that it came in under the radar on the Wii (though I bought it!). If you love JRPGs then try this one!

Game is mid - only likeable because it’s quirky
Imagine the laziest JRPG you ever played. Now throw persona graphics on it, but somehow like 480p versions of them. That’s what this game looks like. Story is downright hilarious - characters are actually enjoyable, but my god why are the graphics so bad? The Wii U was an HD consoles why are these textures so bad?! Why is the dungeon design so bad?! Why is the minimap borderline useless?Fire emblem is an afterthought in this game. Don’t even pretend it’s not. They just slapped some fire embelm names in it and called it a crossover. It’s not great. If you’ve played persona 5 this is like 50 years in the past and offers NOTHING good or interestingly different compared to P5.If you haven’t played Persona 5 - stop reading this and go play it. Hell, Persona 5 strikers is better than this - and that’s more of an action RPG.Any argument about censorship on this version vs the Wii Us is pointless. Why would you care about it in such a MEDIOCRE GAME?!

An awesome mix of Fire Emblem and Persona!
Really great soundtrack, graphics, characters and gameplay! If you enjoy Fire Emblem or Persona, give this a try as it’s a mix of the two!

Bonkers, Mad Cap, JRPG. Thoroughly Enjoyable
Originally released on the doomed Wii-U, Tokyo Mirage Sessions combines the narrative structure and aesthetic of Atlus's Shin Megami Tensei and Nintendo's Fire Emblem franchise. Its depiction of modern day Tokyo is what attracted me this title and it features real life locations such as Shibuya. The cutscenes are full blown anime-esque sequences and veterans of Manga will be familiar with the "quirky" dialogue.Enemy combatants known as Mirages seek to harvest energy/talent from entertainers for a reason that may of been explained but I don't remember, just because I suppose. The "story" if it can be called such, revolves around a group of teenagers who become allied with some friendly mirages that are based on the warriors/characters from the Fire Emblem series. You and your friends are seeking to become "Idols" and operate under the Fortuna Talent agency. You and your Mirage Avatar fight to protect civilians and discover who is behind the attacks. Effort has been made to flesh out the characters so that you can distinguish them from each other. Tsubasa is the prissy neurotic schoolgirl aiming to become a J-POP star and actor. Itsuki is the typical hero-type who is unsure about himself. Maiko (an ex-model 😉) who runs the talent agency and issues the instructions to her blossoming wannabe starlets. The gameplay is Final Fantasy 7 (Original) turn based combat that fittingly takes place on a stage as you and your Mirage exhibit your "talent" You traverse labyrinthine style mazes in an alternative reality encountering enemy's and mini boss fights. The battle system is easy enough to understand and quite tactical. I recommend doing each characters side missions which mainly consists of retreading previously explored areas and allows you to become more familiar with "Shibuya" with its cafes, jewellery shops and mini markets. For a Western audience Tokyo Mirage Sessions shines a light on the interesting unorthodox J-POP culture. Its exuberant dialogue, likeable characters, bright beautiful visuals and gameplay of a minimum 30-40 hours without doing all the side content makes this an imperative purchase for any Japan-ophiles. If you own a Switch and enjoy anime or JRPG's this is an essential purchase and highly enjoyable.
