Disappointing Blu Ray
Twilight Time limited edition of 3000, I have about 30 other Twilight Time titles, all other titles have pristine picture and sound, this one was definitely below their usual standards, very grainy picture, no subtitles, an isolated music score track and an original theatrical trailer as special features, still with all that I’m grateful to get it, great spectacle Cinemascope movie from 1954 ( definitely the inspiration for Ridley Scott’s 2000 film “Gladiator “) just proves you don’t need all the gore that films today seem to think is so necessary, Victor Mature , Susan Hayward and Anne Bancroft( in a supporting role) star in this family friendly film, I guess this was the best source material that the Twilight Time series could find, this review was only for the presentation, not the film, shipping was super fast ( as Amazon always is), an amazing film that has stood the test of time, don’t miss it..

Descent.
It isn't "The Robe", but it is decent. To start with, I love history. Hollywood is awful at it, and this film is no exception. But that's a quibble.I don't believe Victor Mature was as intense in this film as he was in the predecessor; however, he still does a fine job as Demetrius. Jay Robinson continued his outstanding work as the demented Caligula. He steals every scene he's in, but then again, Robinson playing the role of an emperor should. Ernest Borgnine did a great job. Michael Rennie as Peter was harsher than in the first film, especially as he works on Demetrius to get the gladiator back to Christ.I would say the only two weak characters were Claudius played by Barry Jones and Susan Hayward's Messalina. Robinson as Caligula was as vicious to Claudius as John Hurt playing Caligula was some 20 years later in "I, Claudius". In the latter, Claudius, as played by Derek Jacobi, cowered repeatedly knowing he could have been killed at any time, while Jones' Claudius wasn't nearly as effective in portraying that same horror. As far as Hayward, although a good actress, she wasn't believable as Messalina. For one thing, she was too old as Messalina was barely 20 at that point; Debra Paget, had she pulled off the same sex appeal needed for the role, would have been more appropriate. Second, the sexual fire needed for the part of Messalina wasn't there. In that regard, and although around the same age as Hayward, Mature's co-star in "Samson and Delilah", Hedy Lamarr (no, not "Hedley"), probably could have pulled off the part a lot better based on her role as Delilah in the earlier film.

VERY POOR BLU RAY STANDARD.
I like this film so much i decided to upgrade it to blu ray, alas it was a big mistake.First of all the picture quality of the blu ray is not a lot better than the dvd,and certainly no were near the exellent restoration that The Robe received on blu ray.Secondly and more disappointing, the sound is not synchronised with the picture and although hardly noticeable in most scenes it is alarmingly noticeable in the scene were Demetrius is introduced to the gladiators training camp.Needless to say this is very off putting and not of a standard that the customer has a right to expect when purchasing a blu ray were you pay more for what should be the best picture and sound possible. My advice is buy the dvd.

Swords and sandals in biblical times
Tautly edited and directed with aplomb by Delmer Daves, better known for some quality Westerns includingthe original and best "3.10 to Yuma", this is a colourful Cinemascope romp has its hero Demetrius playedby beefcake Victor Mature torn between his Christian beliefs and the licentious pulchritudes of Rome, withplenty of fighting scenes in the arena along the way. Interest is added by the likes of Ernest Borgnine andRichard Egan in supporting roles and a barnstorming turn by Jay Robinson as the mad Emperor Caligula.

My opinion on the movie "Demetrius and the Gladiators"
This movie is an excellent sequel to the magnificent "The Robe".Quite captivating and with the great Victor Mature in the leading part. Also starring the incomparable Susan Hayward and, need I say,a unique Jay Robinson in the part of the evil genius Caligula.A "must" for every lover of true cinema.

Good film
An enjoyable old Hollywood film the only snag was I didn't realise that this was the sequel to the film the robe that starred Richard burton so I will be buying this one soon to accompany demetrius and the gladiators

sub standard recording
I was looking forward to seeing this film. on playing it the main thing i noticed is the very poor picture and sound. I have recorded films that were of a better quality of both picture and audio on my old analogue vhs system. Do not buy this rubbish i have seen better quality copies at a car boot.
