The Classical Three-Section Staff

Looking to learn this form one of these days

Good informative book

I purchased this as a reference for something I am writing. The book itself is great, well-suited for my purposes. However, I bought a NEW copy, and the one I received has obviously been wet. It has water stains on the top and looks like it was crushed at some point. If I wanted a used book, I would have bought used.

This book is written for the experienced student. It is a well written and illustrated 2 man form, three section staff vs spear. The form is rather lengthy, but it's mastery gives you skills that can easily be applied to any long or short weapon. I would highly recommend it to the advanced student.

I read this one in hope of finding techniques of how to wield this famous, historical weapon but didn't find it particularly helpful. Sure, I got some advice from this, but it's not a book on teaching, or instructing you how to use it. It's more of a series of photos and steps that two warriors are taking, more or less displaying a choreographed battle between a spear and a three-sectional-staff.I am certainly fascinated by this medieval weapon and would love to be able to use one well... but I guess I shall have to consult youtube for that instead. This book is great, a must have for anyone interested in the art of the three section staff, a truly unique and deadly weapon!

Great instruction and use of weapon. The pictures help to understand the target and direction of the weapon. Has helped me understand the strikes and target zones.

Three-Section Staff by Rick Wing is detailed and concise in its presentation of the techniques presented. There are about fifty pages that describe history of the staff and its applications and then over a hundred photos that show very clearly grips; swings; and stances. A good buy for anyone who either practices or wants to learn how to swing a Three Section Staff.

I have a thing for flexible weapons and the 3 section staff is one of them. The book gives you a good foundation of where to start but there will be bumps and bruises as you learn them. As with anything kung Fu'ish, the basics are given and you have to learn the nuances yourself with endless practice. Most of the book is the description of the form as only the first 20 pages are dedicated to history and basics of the 3 section staff. This weapon is not for the novice as you have to have the knowledge of the basics to understand how to transition between the different stances. The book stresses the need to understand the use of stances to enhance the power and to be efficient in your movements. The form is a 3 section staff verses spear, which could be adopted to other long weapons such as the staff. The form is long and It will take several months to learn to be decent at it. Hope this reviews helps others.

Staff is very interesting. Book needed to provide exercises for training 3 section staff. Lots of room required for training as I found out the hard way. Wish Amazon sold real Three-section Staffs
