Q: The bottom appears to be just a 'grate' essentially. It appears the media would just fall right out...is that the case?

Depend on the type of media, if it were fine dry sand then yes it would, just like it would for the drainage holes in regular solid wall pots. With somewhat moist soils though, it does not. It also helps to tamp down the bottom inch of soil a little more than you would for the rest of the pot. I have been using these pots for over a year now and the root development has been outstanding. Transplanting to larger pots is so easy with very minimal stress to the roots. you just unwrap the pot.Here is a quick video about the assembly of the pots http://youtu.be/eaolYLf0qTYwhen I transplant to larger pots I go from these propagation size pots up to the 3 gallon equivalent pots and my plants always turn out great.you do need to water a little slower so it fully soaks into the soil or the water will hit the walls and run out the holes. what I do is make a slight bowl shape in the soil around the plant so the water will build up in the center of the pot. Seems to work a little better for when it is time to water the seedlings or clones. For the larger pots, you can not beat the tromph blumats auto watering sensors. hope this helps

lol they made me just order another pack, 2 times I've had mine come with a missing bottom and was told I could just order another 6 to replace the missing one. both time, the pots work, customer service doesn't
