Good reference material. Not for learning
This books covers a lot of good topics about grammar, but it is really more of a reference book than something you can use to really learn Japanese

Half-a@@d cursory treatment
All the books in this series are terrible. They put almost no effort into these things. They’re basically outlines. There are no exercises to help you remember anything.

Format makes this book not good to use for reading practice
I bought this book to improve my Japanese reading practice. The problem with the book is that the Japanese and English are contained within the same line in the sentences. I mean the Japanese and English are in the same line of text, side by side. It would have been better to put the Japanese on one line of text, and then the English on a second line of text below. Then, I could use the book like notecards... I could practice reading the line of Japanese, and then scroll down to see the English. But, since the English translation is revealed in the same line as the Japanese it spoils the effort to translate without seeing the answer at the same time. The content of the book is good, but it lacks any kind of structure for learning Japanese. For example, the Pimsleur Japanese courses have a structure to help you learn. This book is just a bunch of totally random sentences. Hence, the book would have been excellent reading practice material if they had just put the Japanese and English on separate lines. Or, maybe it would have made more sense to release this book as notecards instead of a book. Sorry to be so harsh, but this book is basically worthless to me and I regret spending money on it

Light content
To be honest, I expected a lot from this Japanese grammar book. The content seemed to be pretty interesting and seemed to cover a lot of grammar points needed for the JPLT5.At first, I was satisfied with the part on the particles, which are my weak point in Japanese. It was well summarized and well explained, which helped me a lot to improve my understanding. But as I read, I was disappointed because the content, explanations and examples seemed too superficial to me.In my opinion, this book is useful if you only want to review some grammar content. This book is interesting to read with another of the same series, « Japanese sentence patterns for JPLT5 », which explains more some points and presents some exercises. As I bought it as an ebook, it was not so expansive. If you want something more detailed, it is best to buy something else, like the GENKI books.
