DANGEROUS - Do not risk it.
I got into trouble bringing this into the building at work. Based on the testing and assessment of professional chartered electrical engineers, this item fails basic safety precautions in 4 different ways.1 It does not limit current through the electrodes, delivering when tested currents far in excess of the rating plate figure of 4.5mA and exceeding lethal current levels for the voltage. Inside the only current limiting feature found was the winding resistance.2 It does not isolate the high voltage from ground, meaning instead of needing to touch both electrodes for a shock, touching one is enough to kill you. Current to ground was again found to exceede both the plate figure and lethal limits.3 The electrodes are exposed to be accessible to hands. Needlessly given the ionisied air could travel through gaps that fingers couldn't reach in.4 The earth post is not electrically connected to the chassis, as the paint layer is unbroken. It was their professional opinion that this product is unfit for sale and should be unlisted immediately, and that it does not meet UKCA or CE (despite markings). It could have killed someone, and it could have got me fired. Thankfully it did neither this time. My device was confiscated and destroyed though. Internals are pictured after our site team cut all the wires to prevent further use.
