Beatuifully Illustrated, lovely tale based on true events
This is a beautifully illustrated harrowing tale based on the true story of the rescue of a pod of beluga whales trapped in the waters near the Chukchi Peninsula in the Senyavina Strait of Siberia. Told from the perspective of Glashka, a young girl who has a unique connection with nature which allows her to hear the "whale songs of Narna". Her gift leads her to the belugas which are trapped due to the rapidly freezing waters. Glashka and her people work hard to break the ice to create breathing space for the whales while awaiting help from a Russian Icebreaker. The Icebreaker creates a path but is in a race against time to get the whales to follow back out the path before the ship and whales are trapped. The crew tries a variety of musical interludes to attract the whales. Will Glashka and the Ice Breaker's crew's efforts save the whales in time? Read this inspiring tale to find out! We use this in our homeschool whale unit and also bought one as a gift for friends. My boys really enjoy this story and request it regularly. Leads to great discussions about various topics including team work, geography, roles of music and of course whales!

Touching Story with Beautiful Illustrations
This is based on the true story of the rescue of beluga whales by the people of the Chuchki peninsular, told through the eyes of of a young girl. It is beautifully illustrated in soft muted tones that inspire a wonderful sense of the arctic winter. I used this story as part of earth day education for my scout troop, to demonstrate the relationship between people and the earth. It is best suited to 6 -8 year olds as the story and illustrations are complex and require good listening/observation skills. My girls loved the true story notes at the end. I had many parents ask me about the story afterward - so obviously there was a lot of retelling of the story by the girls at home.

I love this book
I love this book. It's a favorite at our house with 4 year old. It's a good read aloud with a child who has a longer attention span. It's nice to hear about indigenous people use to communicate with the whales

Used for teaching 3rd and 4th graders
I used this for teaching a class of 3rd and 4th grade Special Ed students. They loved it, and I did too. It familiarized them a bit with subjects hitherto unknown to them: Russia, the beliefs and ways of life of an indigenous people, the Arctic Ocean, Beluga Whales, icebreakers, etc. BEAUTIFUL paintings !!

An Excellent Book on Community and Relationships
I purchased this book (among many on here) for my unit on whales and the Inuit (Eskimo) people for my first grade class. This was a great book to share the relationship the people have with whales. It also shared a wonderful way the communities work together as well. What a great book! If you like whales, this is a great one to read to children!
