EDIT: I have been using this for awhile now on my chow, he had deep mats I had no idea he even had till I started using this. I really has done wonders to help his coat, areas I thought I had gotten all the undercoat out with rake/slicker, I use this and come up with alot more. I can tell he feels alot better too. And I'm not having to ruin his coat constantly cutting out mats. There are still areas I have to cut them out by hand but this has helped quite a bit. Won't be without one of these long as I have a double coated dog. I have owned double coated breeds all my life, GSDs, Malamutes, Akitas..Chows etc. Generally I do ok with a slicker & rake as I brush daily, and try to get down to the skin and back-comb. However with my current boy a Chow with a extra heavy coat thats very fine, he was matting constantly, despite being brushed daily or ever other day at longest. Even with back combing, I couldn't always get down to the skin even with the rake. Before I bought this dematter, I found several large mats inside his mane so I knew I had to get ontop of that. I used this the day it showed up. I have used other dematters in the past so I knew its not as simple as just putting it in the coat, giving it a tug and everything just glides out. If you do that with my chows coat, it will just yank...and he will not like you LOL. I found the best method was to use a quick flick of the wrist to use a slight "sawing" motion as you move out from coat, this made the tool go through the tougher mats easier. I am still trying to get some deeper mats out, and no tool other then scissors is going to get large very tangled mats but this has been doing a good job at getting the coat more manageable.

This tool has been the best so far with helping to remove mats from my older cat. She has medium long hair that has a very thick undercoat. We never had this issue until we moved to a dryer climate, and suddenly it was out of control. Last summer my daughter and her husband gave her a shave. She was not a happy cat, and she hasn’t forgiven them completely yet. I could brush her and try to detangle her with the two sided brush I’ve used for years, she was patient until she couldn’t stand the pulling anymore. I saw this tool and thought that it might work. This new tool was great, and she tolerated it very well for a long time. It’s been a process, but so far I’m pleased with the results. I also didn’t end up with as much fur flying around in the air while I was using it. She is much happier with this and it’s marvelous results!! I recommend for cats with mats. It’s a much more peaceful way to remove mats from your furry friend. Fewer tears all around!!

I have 2 rough collies. First I used this comb I was so impressed. It gets right down into undercoat and makes short work of grooming my collies. I was afraid it would hurt their skin after one stroke. But they loved it and just laid there relaxing as I groomed them. Took half the time as well! Amazing product. Highly recommend!!!!

Our friends, also Bouvier owners, turned us on to this tool for making efficient work of clearing mats from the coat. It's definitely one of our better tools, and good value for the money. We have two, one configured for left-hand use, one for right-hand, rather than go through the trouble of reconfiguring a single article depending upon whether my wife or I are using it. First caveat is your dog's safety and comfort. I would not recommend this tool for a first time user. I also hope that no one actually points the blades toward the skin in the manner shown by the advertising photos. That was cringeworthy! The grip makes it easy to keep the edges and sharp ends parallel or away from the dog's skin. If you're not sure, talk to a professional groomer or experienced owner about technique. Second caveat is durability and sharpness. Yes, it is easily cleaned, including in the dishwasher. The stainless is very robust against rust. However, the material durability comes at price of softness and inability to hold an edge, especially against hair. The serrated nature of the edge also precludes sharpening the blades. So this tool has a finite lifespan before it becomes so dull that it pulls the hair excessively before cutting into a difficult mat. If this was a daily use tool on a good-sized dog, I'd estimate needing to replace it every six to nine months. The tool is a good (and inexpensive) attempt at the compromise between a comb, a rake, and a blade. It's a good intermediate step in finding out what tools and techniques work for you and your dogs.

I requested for a replacement. This time everything is perfect. It works so well for formatting my poodle, I now use it every few days to maintain her curly fur effortlessly. Highly recommended. I think my original order was very likely to be pressed during shipment so it deformed and broke. ------- original review Overall I like the design of it. It is so much easier to handle comparing with the one side design rake which can only be held righthanded. However not sure if I got a bad piece, the build quality of this rake is below average. I found the chrome surface peeled off from metal sidearm when I first opened the box. The rake blades have a little play/movement when pressed. And the edges have some dents and a lot of tool marks and not very smooth and sharp. It is still usable. But I really wish it could be made with better quality.

This tool is great for dogs with undercoats!

It's ok, but it was cheap. It somewhat pulls some knots out but overall I found the blades to not be sharp enough to deal with matting without pulling on my cats skin too hard. Probably better for dogs or light jobs overall.

Be careful of the sharpness. Works great on getting out mats from my poodle.

I bought a Persian kitten a year ago from whom I thought was a registered breeder, when I got to her house and saw the kitten she was really matted and kept hiding in corners, the other kittens were fine. I could not leave her with this woman and paid the 650 pounds that she asked for but I knew I was going to have a lot of problems with her, which I did. With love and kindness a year on she is a lovely cat but still does not like to be combed - I have just found this comb and it really is a God send....thank you Hertzko for your Undercoat Rake, it has really helped with the grooming process, my little girls fur is really woolly so it matts very easily. It gets out a lot of fur and the matts without hurting her and she seems to like the comb too ! I highly recommend this comb best buy ever I give it a 10 out of 10 I only wish I had found this comb earlier.

Excellent brush that really gets the undercoat. We have a Great Pyrenees mix and this brush gets right to his skin without hurting, and pulls that undercoat completely out.

Great product. I have two Portuguese Water Dogs and their coats take a lot of grooming. This comb helps to remove the inevitable mats with ease and no stress to the Dogs. My groomer recommended it and I would recommend it to anyone.
