Makes a new hobby easy!
I bought the set of three books in her series and I really like how there are drawings that can copied and worked on, so you can focus on the painting skills, not necessarily your drawing abilities. The different projects teach a wide variety of effects that can easily be used in your own creations. I got lots of inspiration and confidence, working with these.

More like a class handout
I wanted to learn some tips and techniques for painting in gouache. I understood this is a workbook, but isn’t that really a how to book? This is what I would call a class handout with only rudimentary information included. For example, she lists the brushes needed as three very small sized rounds, and then in the first project the instructions are to use a fine liner. She also doesn’t include what type of hair she prefers, natural or synthetic, soft or firm, and it makes a huge difference in results. The book/handout is printed on mat paper and the photos are poor. Although there’s supposed to be 44 pages, a whole lot of them are blank with the word “notes” at the top. For the price it made me feel like I’d been suckered which is never a good feeling. For a few bucks more I can buy a beautiful art book from a top artist with professional production and editing skills used. It’s really a shame because, although not my style, the author does some lovely paintings. My copy, sadly, is being returned.

Lovely art work
I write the above with some wish I hadn't indulged in this book though because I have never painted in that medium and after reading about it, i probably won't but I hope I can find some use for the art pieces themselves in my preferred mediums. That said. the seller was very prompt and the packaging more than sufficient to protect my purchase!

An excellent book for understanding gouache painting
This book, though short, presents an excellent introduction to painting birds specifically (useful for beginners or more advanced painters), but also to gouache painting in general for the beginner. As a newcomer to gouache (from watercolour and inks), it was extremely helpful to see how to build up a painting in detail, from underpainting to fine detail to blending. Unlike many painting guides, which often show a painting in its start, middle, and end phases, this book has step by step instructions (about 20-30 per bird) which are straightforward to understand so that you can focus on your technique. Furthermore the paintings are reproduced in their full size throughout the book so it is easy to compare what you have done with the examples as you go through the steps. There are two preliminary technical exercises to complete (a blue-jay feather and an owl eye), and then the three birds in full on the cover. The only gripe I have with it is the use of a comic sans style font throughout, which gives the book a slightly juvenile vibe, but the content is absolutely excellent.

Backwards
I'm hoping to start using this book soon BUT there is a problem. Although the content is fine the book is BACKWARDS and missing a few pages. This is going to be interesting!
