This book is written in French and composed of a number of short stories including De Maupassant's famous "La Parrure" (The Necklace"). His style is rather pessimistic and critical, but he often paints a vivid picture of the 19th century. His stories are interesting to read and discuss.

Guy de Maupassant is the Maury Povich of the 19th century
Great collection of stories, very well written with vivid descriptions. They all have the same general theme of illegitimate children or adults wronging each other, often with an odd twist at the end. There are enough unknown paternity stories to make me feel like I'm reading an episode of Maury Povich.

Great, for fans and newbies
I enjoy reading Maupassant in the original French. His work seems to be regarded as more easily readable than other French authors. Not everyone likes his often dark subject matter, but whether one considers it good or bad may really be expressing personal taste.

Excellent
Maupassant, his short stories as well as his novels, are among my all time favorites in french literature. I enjoy this book so much. As any first rate writer each of his stories takes right there, you forget yourself and your surroundings completely and become one with the story. Too bad there are no such books written and/or published today.

A good study book
A good study book for early/intermediate level; lots of words to look up, but the stories are short and seem relatively straightforward.

Wonderful story teller
I majored in French language and literature so de Maupassant was not new to me. I just loved reading something in French again.

nice addition
Contes du jour et de la nuit is a nice addition to my Kindle library. It has afforded me an opportunity to keep my French fresh. I shall continue to look for French language novels and short stories to buy and download.

Maupassant never disappoints.
I thought I had read every one of Maupassant's short stories but in this book I found some I hadn't. They are the usual scary, fantastic, excellent tales. By far one of my favorite authors, never disappointing.

Excellent and rich short stories
This (e)book is made of short stories. Some are light hearted and some are harsh (thus probably the title day and night). The author has an unforgiving style and doesn't care about happy endings. His description of characters and their mind is given in a realistic way, without beautiful hero, without soothing unfairness. But he has this amazing ability to take your hand, guide you to their soul and follow their journey. It was written around 1880 so there are some words difficult to understand, especially like clothes description, but feelings and thoughts haven't evolved so much!

The short story par excellence
From a hilarious opening story about a postman who gets more than he bargained for when he hears sounds of a struggle on his route to a heartbreaking tale of a lost necklace - Maupassant and Chekhov both share the gift of being able to create time, place and a flashbang of profound emotion in a few scant pages.
