Brian Wilson - SMiLE Piano, Vocal and Guitar Chords

"SMiLE" is very advanced music. In spite of its history as an unfinished Beach Boys album, it isn't really rock and roll music, having more in common with gospel, baroque classical, pastoral, and any number of other genres. It is a beautiful work of high art, a sentiment which has been more than adequately stated in the reviews for the CD.The sheet music transcriptions here seem perfectly accurate to my ears. The music contains a number of unusual and complex chords, as well as swift passages which defy categorization as "chord changes"; for example, "Our Prayer" changes its harmonic basis so rapidly, it's amusing to imagine a rhythm guitarist attempting to block it out as a series of strummed chords -- but such an attempt would doubtlessly be educational. For guitarists, keyboardists -- players of any polyphonic instrument, really -- there is much to be learned about voicings, here. "Our Prayer" is, of course, an a capella piece for four or more singers, but learning it on an instrument will be a fun and inspiring challenge.Learning to play the music on SMiLE -- or attempting to; some of it is quite difficult -- will be educational to any ambitious musician, and surely will be inspirational to composers or songwriters. Any musician who enjoys the album SIMPLY MUST have this book. Even beginning players should buy it now, and challenge themselves to grow into the advanced compositions.

This is a songbook of Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE. As long as you know how to read music, you're in good shape. I do not know how to read music unless it is the chords that thread together in the melody. I know how to play music by ear so reading the chords is the best way to learn the music. Great book! Long live SMiLE!
