Nice introduction to Rosh Hashanah customs for kids 2-6.
Parents and teachers can introduce the customs of Rosh Hashanah to kids 2-6 with Time to Start a Brand New Year. The book covers dipping apples in the honey, making New Year cards, baking round challos, preparing and serving a festive meal, listening to the shofar, and "tossing your sins" into a body of water. The text is appropriate for all Jewish families, and even non-Jews who want to learn what Jews do on their New Year, although many of the details of the pictures will make more sense to more religiously observant readers (the mother is separating a small amount of dough from the challah dough for the mitzvah of hafrashas challah, for example, and there are pomegranates, leeks, carrots, dates, and fish on the table as well as the apple and honey). One of my children loved the book. Another liked it, but was not much a fan of how the text skipped from topic to topic with little transition. (She was above the target age, I should note.) I would have liked the book better if it gave some explanation for the practices described. Nonetheless, Time to Start a Brand New Year makes a nice little introduction into the High Holiday season for young readers.I received this book for free, but without commitment to give a review of any kind, positive or not.
