Riedel Ouverture Red and White Magnum Glass and Champagne Flute

The 3 styles of glasses that come with this set (4 larger magnums for red wine; 4 smaller glasses for red or white; and 4 champagne glasses) are all beautiful, feel very nice in your hand and look to be of high quality. For $80 you get 12 glasses, that's less than $7 per glass- cannot beat the price. They don't look cheap at all. To the contrary they look beautiful, the glass is thin but sturdy and we agree that wines taste better in these glasses than they did in our other (cheaper) glasses. Pricing is such that you can feel comfortable using them as your 'every-day' glasses, and they can easily be used for nicer occasions. Also if a glass breaks, your heart won't break because it was only (less than) $7 / glass. A few notes: the magnum has a very short stem, lending itself to cupping the vessel vs. holding the stem- which is a better way to drink a red wine. The magnum has a large opening so you can easily get your nose in there, dramatically enhancing the aroma. If you insist on holding the stem, you may not like this magnum due to the short stem making it a bit challenging to get a grip on it. Red / white wine glass- to me looks like more of a white wine glass but it could definitely double for a red glass (particularly for a lighter, less full-bodied red). Champagne glasses: I love with the larger vessel. It's bold and beautiful. If you prefer a smaller / more dainty vessel, you may not care for these champagne glasses. We bought 1 'pay 8 get 12' box to see if we liked them, and we do. In fact we just bought 2 more boxes. We're glad we bought this non-varietal specific set. We enjoy drinking wine but we're not connoisseurs, and we drink many different varietals. So this was perfect for us. We also entertain a fair bit, so having a full set of 12 glasses that can accommodate all of our wine / champagne needs made more sense than having several smaller sets of the varietal-specific glasses. With that said, some of the varietal-specific sets from Riedel look amazing, so at some point we may by pairs of a few of them for special occasions. The packaging is amazing. We won't be keeping it as we store our glasses in cupboards, but if don't have space to do that or you just like to keep your glassware in boxes, the packaging on this set is really nice. All 12 glasses fit into one box with a small handle on top, and each of the 3 different glass styles comes in their own fold-open 'crate' that you can easily pull out of the box, pull the # of glasses you need, etc. Packaging is designed so that it's quick and easy to take out and replace glasses into the packaging- i.e. no wrap paper, etc.

We were getting rid of our balloon reds so decided to get these since we already had the white wine glasses (also bought from Amazon) & liked them. And, there was a "Buy 6, get 8" option for these, which I see is still available. The size is perfect. Following the guideline of pouring only ⅓ of a glass at a time yields a generous amount of wine. They're comfortable in the hand & we've had no problem with breakage. Riedel has a glass for just about anything you can imagine drinking - the thistle-shaped glasses for single malt scotch are especially attractive. And glasses in the various collections easily coordinate with other collections. The designs of the decanters, which also go with any of the collections, are imaginative & unique - & some are large enough to hold 2 bottles of wine. My husband was thrilled to get a captain's/ ship's decanter for Christmas. NO, I DON'T WORK FOR RIEDEL - just really like their products - the designs, the quality, & the pricex & have found Amazon to have the best prices of the sources I've checked.

I've used these glasses for over 2 years now. I bought them as a low-cost alternative to regular Riedel, since I got tired of guests constantly breaking $25 glasses. They are sturdier than regular Riedel and will go in the dishwasher. However, they are still somewhat delicate, and our guests do often break them on our granite countertops---but less frequently than regular Riedel. (And it's cheaper to break these at $8-$10 a stem than regular Riedel at $25 each.) If you need all 8, best to order two packs as at least one will certainly arrive broken! (Amazon needs to pack these better.) If you can live with 6 glasses, you might be OK. I just replaced my set since two more got broken over Christmas, so I was down to only 4. So what? Most wine glasses get broken eventually (since people are---well--getting drunk sometimes!); I just don't want to feel hostile towards guests for breaking expensive ones! So these are a great compromise solution. I really like these glasses---so the glasses get 5 stars even though the packaging gets 1 star. The size is PERFECT. Deep enough to be able to get a good swirl and bouquet. Some people have commented on the short stems but for me, it gives the glass more stability than the longer-stemmed glasses. They're still really thin-lipped and so a pleasure to drink from. For me, these glasses hit the perfect value combination of elegance, functionality, and cost. And they still say RIEDEL on the base.

These glasses are everything that all the positive reviews say they are. They absolutely do "make the wine taste better." All the positive attributes described in great detail here already are true of these glasses. They are beautiful; nice, big glasses; super-thin rim. The stems are short, yes. However, the durability is really the issue I wanted to speak to in this review. I see several reviewers stating their experience has been that the glasses are fragile and break extremely easily. This has not been my experience. Upon first receiving the glasses, I babied them. I was extra careful with all handling of the glasses. Then, a very large vitamin bottle fell out of an upper cabinet, landing directly onto one of the glasses sitting underneath, knocking it off the counter, and onto the linoleum floor. The glass bounced. It did not break. It did not even chip. It is still as perfect now as it was straight out of the box. This is my personal experience. If you have any reservations about purchasing these glasses, please reconsider. I have zero regrets on these, have given another set as a gift, and plan to purchase more.

Excellent glasses that bring out the subtle scents of different tequilas. If you're drinking tequila, you need these glasses. Shipping was excellent, as I had them 4 days after I ordered.
