How do you recharge the batteries? do i need to buy anything extra to charge from my house ac wall outlet? i'm in usa.

There is a USB plug on the side where it can be recharged by a computer, external battery, or any USB charger. No need to get any extra cords it comes with one. Flip open the bottom flange and there is another USB outlet where you can charge a phone or another devise. Comes with two 18650 batteries but it works great with just one. The extra battery makes it light longer. This is an excellent light and its bright! I bought two for camping and earthquake preparedness.

I just received one of these, Not working with flat top 18650s. Is mine a defective unit or do they all only work with button top batteries?

The light does not work with flat top 18650s sadly I have a ton of them but without the button top the batteries don't make a connection inside the light

Are the batteries protected from over charging? Button top (lenth)?

The batteries have over charge protection. They're a little longer than a standard 18650

Can i run the lantern while it is connected to an external battery or usb charger? i would imagine that the heat generated would stress out the unit.

I am not sure. But, I did replace the batteries that came with this light with better batteries to extend the use of the light.
