Crispy, Flavorful, and Foolproof
Zatarain’s Southern Buttermilk Chicken Fry Mix is a game-changer in the kitchen. It delivers that perfect golden crunch with a rich, savory buttermilk flavor that makes homemade fried chicken taste like restaurant quality. The seasoning is well-balanced—just enough spice to keep it interesting without overpowering the chicken. The 9 oz pack size is generous, and having a set of 8 means I’m always stocked up for family dinners, gatherings, or quick weeknight meals. It coats evenly, fries up beautifully, and consistently gives me crispy, juicy results. If you want fried chicken that’s easy to prepare and bursting with Southern flavor, this mix is a must-have pantry staple.

Small Quantity
I wanted to try a new flavor for my chicken and Zatarain's has a good reputation for flavor. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. I purchased 2 boxes. The first box I decided to pan fry chicken. The next box I think I will air fry pork chops. Since the instructions have you making a wet batter with it and dredging it in dry mix, the mix runs out quickly and 2 boxes would be required to cover a small amount of meat. It make take a few to several boxes for a large family. The flavor was very good. I probably price out a the local market for value and check if there are other size selections. Worth trying

Very tasty seasoning for Fried Chicken
I purchased this seasoning to help me make fried chicken using my Cosori air fryer. The mixer is very tasty and really helps to crisp up the chicken. I already have it on my autoship list.

A Mixed-Bag Mix
I love good fried chicken! Sadly, my love for fried chicken is equal to my inability to make it. This fry mix takes the "Guess, Try, Pray" out of the process. I did like the resulting texture, but also found the flavor to be more salty than I would prefer. The salt actually overwhelmed the other flavors in the mix. I may try again or I may just move on to another mix.

Best mix and flavor
To make great fried chicken you just need this mix, Crisco oil, buttermilk and a cast iron pan. Soak chicken pieces overnight in enough buttermilk to coat. Then coat pieces in the Zatarain’s/water mixture. Then shake pieces in the dry Zatarain’s in paper bag or ziplock. Oil in hot pan to 1/2” depth. Do not add your oil to a cold pan and heat oil and pan together. Get the pan good and hot and then add your oil. Low medium heat. You don’t need high heat which just splatters and makes a mess. Fry pieces skin side down for 10 minutes, leaving alone. Don’t crowd your pieces. If you have 10 thighs, cook 5 at a time. Not crowding makes a difference. Turn for 10 more minutes. Move to plate with paper towel for draining. Adjust cooking time according to size of chicken pieces.
