Not really, if you assemble it carefully, but some moisture will get inside if this item isn't under cover and the rain blows really hard. I store outdoor toys in this bench so I put them inside large black plastic bags & tie them. The toys, such as badminton sets and horseshoe sets never get wet but sometimes I find water on the bags. I live in south Louisiana and we get long, hard rain storms. When we have a sunny day, I open the bench and let the water on the bags dry up.

can you put a lock on it?

instructions says you can put a lock and shows where it goes, but there is No hole for a lock. you need to drill your own hole to use a lock. easy to do. I took me 2 min. w/ a 5/8 drill. Wife keeps her gardening tools in them.

Would it melt if it was a reasonable distance from a normal size fire pit?

I don't have a fire pit, but I doubt it would melt if people sitting at the same distance were not uncomfortable.
