Our cats are accustomed to being fed at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. everyday. We ordered these in order to make sure they were fed while we were gone for two days. We weren't sure if they would take to an automatic feeder like these since they are accustomed to being served like the royalty that they are. But they did, so much so that we came back home to three very content (and slightly pudgy) kitties. They are not impressed now that they don't have food available 24/7 (they are back to being served a reasonable portion twice a day!) and I think one of them was trying to pull our suitcase out of the closet as a hint for us to leave again.

Needs a Modification
I purchased this product after reading the reviews. I found that I needed to trim (with scissors) the top of the opening where the food comes out to allow free flow of food to the tan bowl below. Someone else had provided this solution in a review. That works.

Five Stars
Love this, used to have the automatic food and water ones, after a couple years the flaps that control the portion control eventually broke off and it became a free feeder anyways so this is better because it holds way more and is easier to clean and the automatic water fountains get annoying over time because they don't seem to clean well anymore and you get tired of having to take it apart and clean fur out of the nasty pump and this holds a ton more water, so for a lot of reasons these are way easier, cheaper and bigger. With two cats I maybe have to fill both once every two weeks, but maybe not even that often, especially on the food. For everyone who has a problem with pets knocking them over, I've always had what's pictured at the end of my island to keep all my pet stuff in the baskets and these two fit perfectly in there so there won't be any knocking over. Think it was two target or Wal-Mart shelves and baskets I just left a shelf out of each for the feeders to fit. The water does make a kind of loud glug sound when the level goes down and it fills (it's not often), it startled my cats the first time or two, now there's no reaction and they continue on so its not a problem. I got the largest size ones, the 3 gallon for water and 12 lb for food and they are the same size. I don't get all the bad cap reviews for the water one, maybe the cap issues are for the smaller models? I'm not sure what all those bad reviews are about, the model I have the cap is normal and easy, but I don't over tighten it.

Food Does NOT Come Down On Its Own
Overall, I cannot say I am very satisfied with this product.PROs: (1) large capacity for my Siberian husky- lasts about two weeks once full; (2) stable base and does not seem top-heavy; (3) big opening on the top to easily fill with a scoop; (4) lid seems to snap pretty securely.CONs: (1) the food gets stuck and does not fall down to fill the bowl- you have to shake it, which completely defeats the purpose of the feeder. I have tried to put something under the base to prop it forward a little bit, and that has worked a little better, but the food has still gotten stuck. Also, propping it forward does make it less stable and prone to falling over. Please note I have used two types of dog food, small bits and large bits and they both do the same thing.

These suck
I hate these. I am going on vacation and wanted to make sure my cats have plenty of food. We tried these out two times to see if they would work before we go. The container holds lots of food, but doesn't come out of the container. The food is small and it is just your normal cat food, no crazy big pieces blocking it or anything. Whatever is in the bowl the cats can get, but the rest wont flow out. These are junk and I wish I never bought them. I got two and I feel like I just wasted all my money and now have to figure out something else for my cats while I am away.

A very good feeder for small pets.
This is a very handy feeder for small pets such as cats as three pounds can feed for many days - especially useful during travels. The design is simple yet works (by gravity). The plastics used is clean and has no chemical odors upon arrival. The transparent middle portion is practical as it can clearly show how much is left in reservoir. Stability can be improved with a heavier base in future versions, if any. Made in USA.

worth buying!
Such a great purchase! This has helped me a lot with feeding my cats. Sometimes there isn't always someone home to give them dry food during the day and this is one less thing I need to worry about during my day. I don't have to worry if they have enough food because it will always be there and I can just reload it when it gets full. I wasn't sure if one of my cats was going to like it but she does! In the beginning she was still waking us up in the morning to feed her but now she's grown accustomed to it. Totally worth purchasing if you're not home for long periods of time and are worried about your pets being hungry.

Defies the gravity that’s crucial to its success!
We went on a long weekend trip and left the cat at home, sadly. We figured this would be good for him to eat at his own leisure instead of timed feedings. The day before we left, I wanted to test it out so I poured some food in and to my dismay, discovered that when placed directly on solid ground, no food came out on its own. You basically had to use your hand like a shovel and dig out anything new.I elevated the feeder a little bit (see photo) and it helped a tad but it still wasn’t as successful as I had liked. This thing needs to be secured at like a 45 degree angle to work properly. Gonna shop for a new one.

Useful info....hopefully
I don't think there's much I can add to other reviews - this does what it says on the tin; it's a basic gravity feeder. It's completely idiot-proof, dump food in one end and it flows out of the other. The reason I can't give it five stars is that it's really not designed for anything but the smallest biscuits - you'll probably be OK with any of the store brands, but if your fluffy is on one of the specialist or specific moondust-and-unicorn-hoof vet diets, you're going to hit issues. I've managed to adapt it for Royal Canin, but I don't think the Hills dry biscuits will work in this at all.RC biscuits are only a little bit bigger than the Whiskas/Go-Cat/Generic Boiled Horse so, if your fluffy is a delicate little flower on a mission to bankrupt you and is on one of the RC diets here are some tips to make it work. Firstly, fill it then put it into the base with your hand over the bottom opening so you can see the flow. You'll get an initial rush of nosebag, but then start to remove the biscuits very gently from the front, mimicking how your cat would eat from it. This will show you how and where the biscuits "back up" and you need to get creative with a sharp knife and enlarge the openings just slightly in strategic places. I hacked away where the plastic "lipped" by a couple of mm, and also cut out the "bump" right at the bottom in the middle. Now bandage up the slashes in your hands and try again (its better to cut away tiny bits and keep trying.) Eventually, you should get to the point where you can see the biscuits flow easily, but they likely still won't flow right into the bowl. Unlike many feeders this has a ramp, but it's not steep enough to whoosh larger pieces right down into the bowl. This is really easily remedied; just tilt the feeder from the back so you're effectively boosting gravity a little bit. Yes, this means the container is not vertical (which made me anxious but I'm a bloody weirdo!) but nobody in their right mind is buying this for it's aesthetic appeal! Find something to stand underneath the back of the feeder thus tipping the entire unit forward so the increased slope helps the biscuits flow perfectly into the bowl. These are very useful, especially if you have a fussy eater - it's kept fresh in the container and they can go back to it little and often. It's NOT a good idea if you have a fatso - my previous cat would have sat in front of it until he exploded. But if you have the cat that likes to eat without an audience and goes back every few hours, these really are perfect - the biscuits aren't going stale as they do in a large bowl and its extremely easy to fill, clean and maintain.I'm not sure any gravity feeder is going to work with larger biscuits. This is probably as good as it gets, and at least you can maul it around to make it work. But if you use Hills, or any other larger biscuit, I don't think any of these gravity feeders will work.

Excellent
Really wasn’t sure about this as my cats are fussy with their food (aren’t they all?!) but this works a treat.I have two cats and fill this up with half a small bag of Iams for them to share. They generally eat wet food, the dry they use more as a supplement. Half a bag lasts my cats about a week.By the end of the week, and they reach the last bits, they’re still happy eating from here, and so the food must be kept fairly fresh otherwise they would just leave it. I then refill it with the second half of the bag.As others have said, sometimes (rarely) the food doesn’t drop down quite so freely as you might like, but the cats just reach in, try to get it and it all just falls down then. Don’t let this put you off. It doesn’t happen a lot and even when it does the cats make the food drop anyway. This product is great for three reasons:-1. I don’t have to keep filling their dry food dish two/three times a day, saving my knees and saving me time.2. I don’t throw dry food away anymore whereas previously I would throw out what’s left in the dish at the end of the day. I’m using much much less dry food now. This will pay for itself soon!3. I would happily leave them for a weekend with this knowing they will eat and won’t starve.Definitely recommended

This is awesome and saves me the panic when I 'pop to the shop quick' and six hours later realise I have three hungry cats waiting at home because they help themselves when they want it. The kibble stays fresh inside the container and as others have said, no the kibble doesn't all fall down to fill the tray, but seriously, my cats can break their way into a sealed box of kibble hidden inside a cupboard if they want to, they can easily knock more kibble out of this! I have three cats and a full one of these will last them about a week and one of them is a greedy little sod.

Really good product, however the croquettes don't fall out that easily so they need to be pushed down a bit with a finger to actually fill the bowl. But worst case scenario the cat can still access them in the part where the container meets the bowl.
