Quiet Riot

An extremely underrated production...
First of all, I'm not sure why tracking information wasn't updated; I received this CD in a most timely fashion. That having been said, I must admit that, by the mid-1980s, I was feeling a bit disillusioned by the state of hard rock and heavy metal. Those feelings came to a head by the late 1980s. Many of my beloved bands were in, uh, transitional phases, Quiet Riot being just one of many.Fast-forward nearly four decades later, and I find myself pleasantly surprised by QR's post-Dubrow CD. It's a lot grittier and bluesier than their previous releases, of which I am a huge fan. Kevin Dubrow, may he rest in peace, had a distinctive voice that made QR stand out, but this one was an overall solid record. Too bad it became Quiet Riot's swan song...

No Kevin? No problem!
People will argue they should have changed the name with no Kevin on vocals. Maybe the band agrees with you and you will find out on the extended liner notes/story in this CD. Even with no Kevin, musically this might be the best QR out there. Highly recommend if you enjoy late 80s to early 90s hard rock / metal. Rock Candy did a wonderful job with the reissue, so grab one, no two before they are gone. Great record and great reissue!

Rough Cutt 111
I very much enjoyed this material regardless of the morons that criticized the remastering of it. The reason why it doesn't sound as good as a modern recording is because of the analog technology of the the eighties. I went to music school and when we I had to mix a recording my teacher was of the zeigeist that it should have little low-end and have mid-range and to some extent high-end, accentuated. Take into account compression/limiters- and thirty years later having been remastered digitally and you get the edge of envelope audio clarity and enhancement. As far as the content well hell- Paul Shortino has a rarefied voice replete with bravado and melody. With Billy Thorpe's studio partner Spencer Proffer directing the aural traffic, it couldn't have been steered in a better direction by the difficult taskmaster ! The result is Rough Cutt 111.

No Slade covers here
Not a lot of magic here, I'm afraid. Quiet Riot's early hits were Slade covers redone for metal heads. What happens when you run out of Slade covers to perform? As a metal act, they were doomed, because they couldn't write hits. If they had help from their publisher, it would have been a different story. "Stay with Me Tonight" is the highlight of the album, and the remastering means it sounds better than it did in the 80's.

I love this album
I love this album, albeit clearly set in the 80's. It's harmoniously enjoyable with great melodies, soreing lead guitar solos and a tight and cohesive band! It feels as if the band themselves are enjoying the songs!I owned it on cassette when I was 14 and now bought the CD for a nostalgic return to my teens!
