would this work with concrete/ brick dust? Looking for a way to extend the life of my filters and wondering if this is the 1% that makes it through

Look at it this way: 1) It's a tool, so you can expect wear and tear over time, and even to have to replace it, if it gets a lot of use and abuse. 2) If it lasts a year and, during that year, knocks down even fifty percent of what's going into your collector, you've had to empty and clean the filters on the man system half as much. 3) As tools go, I consider the price of this one fairly cheap. Now, some facts: 1) I was using a Paint Shaver Pro, which is like an angle grinder with three carbide bits on it, to shave paint off siding. It put out a LOT of dust. The Paint Shaver required a vac system, to avoid burning it up and a simple, 16 gallon shop vac did a good job of collecting most of what the Shaver produced. However, the dust would plug my vac in 5 minutes or less. To solve the problem, I built a water bath pre-filter, which worked, but cleaning it was messy, and the dust foamed, big time. While reading a woodworking magazine, I saw an item called a Dust Deputy and, after considering the information, decided to gamble. I tossed Oneida a couple hundred for the metal version AND HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK. The little Deputy spun most of the powder from that and even sheet rock sanding out so well, I was able to switch to a much smaller, but still pretty powerful vac. The Deputy did so well, it inspired me to buy (invest in) a 3 horse Dust Gorilla and, later, a Super Dust Deputy for the shop and I'm thinking of adding this Super Dust Deputy XL to one of my Jet 3 horse collectors. SIDE NOTES 1) The Super DD pre-filters one of my two 3 horse Jets, but does double duty as a lawn vacuum system. To that end, I mounted the SDD on a large, plastic drum, installed handles, wheels, so it can be moved around easily. I bought a little Harbor Freight collector just for the purpose of vacuuming the pine cones from the lawn, and leaves from the flower beds. It, also, picked up paint chips from the gravel around a commercial building. It did a great job of getting the chips, but also grabbed about a gallon or two of gravel. However, thanks to the SDD, none of those things went through the impellers of the collector. 2) To aid in monitoring the fill level of the barrel, I installed a long Plexi view port using rivets and silicone caulk. Even when using clear bags, I am able to see how full the barrel is. 3) I use clear, light weight lawn bags to line the barrel. To keep from sucking the bags up, I just made a cage from fencing I bought at a Big Box store. As long as you use the cage, the bags will work fine. Too, when emptying them, do not try to lift the bags out. Instead, lay the barrel on its side and let the bag and dust pour out while you coax it by tugging on it. 4) Air leaks. Air leaks are a BIG deal with these cyclones. I had a couple TINY ones and, within an hour of running, the vacuum would collapse the, relatively, heavy cage. To find the leaks, I bought some incense and tracked down where the smoke would disappear into the barrel, as the system ran. The insulation noodle I used to seal the top worked fine, but the caulk must have shrunk just enough to leave a couple pin holes. Though tiny, since filling them, the bag and cage have quit collapsing.

Can this unit handle powder dust like from drywall. We want to put it on a conveying system for gypsum powder.

The simple answer is no. But, adding the Dust Deputy will vastly extend the life of filters or collection bags and save you money in the long run. The dust deputy, like all cyclone separators, is only part of a multi-stage system. Usually as part of a two stage system where the Dust Deputy separates around 90-95% of the particles. Very fine dust (like the dust from gypsum board) will likely pass and need to be collected in the filtration bag normally attached to the vacuum unit. The next issue is the type of vacuum. If a shop-vac, there are bags you can purchase at your local box store specifically for gypsum dust. If a larger unit like a wall mounted system, then you will need to ensure the filter, or filter bag as the case may be, is fine enough for gypsum dust (usually 1 micron or smaller). With most wall mount units the bag both collects and filters. High end units will have a filter separate from the bag. Normally the bag that comes with wall mounted units will be in the 3-5 micron range. Also, if the wall mount unit uses a filtration bag (instead of a filter & bag), then the bag will clog periodically. You will notice this with a loss of suction, probably every half hour or so depending on use. However, all you have to do is turn the vacuum off momentarily and shake or strike the bag to settle the clog. Then turn it back on and continue. Whats the difference in the dust deputies besides the prices? They all claim 99% dust removal but vary a huge amount in dollars.

It all depends on the hose size. If you are using a dust collector with a 4"+ hoses you need the larger dust deputies. If you are using a shop vac you need the smaller hose inlets.
