Bicycling Science, fourth edition (Mit Press)

This is a review of the format, not the content. I was leery of ordering Kindle version because books with lots of illustrations and tables (as this one has) are often badly formatted, with tables that don't fit on the page, out-of-focus illustrations, and other annoyances. However, that's not the case with this book.

Reams of irrelevant data on rail road cars, why exactly ?Loads of data on atp take-up (what does that have to do with bicycles?,Little to no actual science. Not really worthy of MoT gossip much less MIT pressThis read like MAML bible with loads of outdated bro science and little to no actual reproducible information aka science .You know those trivial books who attempt to justify a lack of information with reams of references and side tangents about nothing. That's this... Sorry I bought this which I don't often say about books.

If you are looking for a book to really break down the science of bicycle design, and the nitty gritty how and why of frame geometry, suspension and other details similar to what motorcycle design books like "motorcycle design and technology" or motorcycle dynamics" that illustrates with diagrams, formulas and explanations then look elsewhere. This book gets tantalizingly close, but is very superficial it misses the mark, there is no detailed explanations on the differences between, road, mountain bike, BMX or trial bike frame geometry and relationship with handling and performance. This reads more like a collection of published articles than a solid reference book. I don't want to be mean, but seriously this book is lacking. The next revision. Should feature more illustrations, formulas, reference tables and less verbose text, also descriptions for different types of bicycles.

Great content but text too fine to read with less than perfect vision. If you want to understand the history of the theory of bicycle physics this is a great book but it seems to be an economy reprint of Western edition. Paper quality is thin and font is fine to pack a lot of content into less paper. FIne lines make the diagrams less appealing.I don't have perfect reading vision but can read a newspaper easily although not the cramped labels on medicines.Overall this book is worth buying and the compact size makes it easy to carry but I wish there was also a hardcover or premium reprint available.

Well written, comprehensive and authoritative. This book does exactly as its title says. It is a big improvement on the earlier editions, including using SI units for analysis. You don't have to be geeky to read it (although it probably helps). There are loads of references to follow up original papers and simple explanations of why, for instance, power required to overcome air resistance increase with the cube of the speed ( frequently incorrectly described in articles on cycling). Not cheap but excellent value. If you want to understand more about this great sport/ pastime/ method of transport- buy it.

Het boek is up to date met de ontwikkelingen in de techniek. De teksten zijn een beter leesbaar. Meer ingewikkelde formules zijn naar de referenties en bijlagen verplaatst. Het boek is breder van opzet, met wat minder diepgang. Duidelijk een keuze die de auteurs zelf gemaakt hebben.
