Perfect
I hate pastels for their nightmare texture and sensory feeling, so finding high quality pastel pencils has been a boon. I use them for final touches on my watercolor paintings and they’re perfect for that! I can’t say how’ they’d work for a regular pastel piece, but they’re smooth and pigmented, so I’d assume well. Hold a point very well and sharpen easily

Pure Pigment Load, less smudging
I purchased this on a lightning deal, so this review/opinion is not sponsored in any other way. This is my first set of pastel pencils so I do not know how they compare to others. But, I normally use Rembrandt soft pastel sticks so I can compare to using those. The colors are rich and my set of 20 have a great variety. There are brights and more natural primary colors. I've attached a swatch color chart. The hexagonal barrel is easy to hold and will not roll off your desk which can cause damage to the core. The cores are much thicker than an average pencil so you aren't cheated on the product. I have noticed that some colors are smoother and easier to blend than others, probably because of the differing pigments used. I did find a few colors that seemed to "scratch" more but was able to remove that with the included sandpaper. In general, they are a little harder, not as "chalky",and do not leave a lot of dust than my Rembrandts. You also do not need to lay down as many layers to get rich color and blending so you will not create a lot of dust...well dust just leads to smudges.

Great colours, difficult to layer
Pros - EXCELLENT colour selection. One of the best limited selections I've seen across any medium.Great box.Great pigment load.Cons - Quite scratchy and hard.Almost impossible to layer over other pastels.UPDATE: Using these again, they did layer better this time. They were extremely smooth and pleasant to use. Maybe it was the paper. In any case, the scratchiness is still somewhat variable but not as bad as when I first tested them. This is worth getting if it is on sale but otherwise I prefer my Stabilo Carbothellos since they layer better and that's usually how I use pastel pencils. However, if I was ONLY using pastel pencils I would probably reach for these since the colours are fantastic.

So there's a funny story behind this...
It's prime day deals and I'm buying up art supplies like mad. Plus buying some stuff for my new house. I see these and I already love the small set of Luminance I got. I'm thinking pastel COLORS. Not actual pastels. And boy was my face red when I got these. I have no idea how to use them. But I'm a determined bird. I get on my art groups and look up YouTube videos and I'm figuring this stuff out!! So I pull some pages from a few coloring books. I'm not really great with it yet but I included a pic of one of the pages I did. I love that these are so soft and glide right on to both my coloring pages and my drawings. I'm so very happy for this hilarious mistake. These are beautiful!!! And fun!
