My 2.5 year old daughter's doctor recently told us she was showing signs of a deficiency in essential fatty acids, and suggested we put her on a fish oil supplement. The sign she was talking about is a bumpy, colorless rash on the back of my daughter's arms. I was surprised because we serve a healthy, whole-food diet which is pretty rich in "good fats" but then when I thought about it I realized that just because we serve it, doesn't mean she actually eats it. Frankly, she lives mostly on a steady diet of Fuji apples. Sometimes she eats the fish and eggs and other things we cook, but not always. I knew Nordic Naturals was a trusted brand, so I decided to try these ones first. She absolutely loves them! I give them to her with her Vitamin D gummy bear, and she usually picks these up first before she gets her gummy. She does chew them. The dosage is 4 softgels, so my only complaint is that they'll run out pretty quickly. This 180 count bottle is only a 45 day supply for a child. Before writing the review, I decided to try one to see what it tasted like. It doesn't taste fishy at all that I can tell. When the softgel bursts, it releases a small amount of strawberry flavored liquid. The softgel itself takes a while to chew or dissolve. It vaguely reminds me of some familiar childhood candy but I can't quite put my finger on what. I can't quite figure out what my daughter sees in them that makes her love them SO much, but neither can I find anything objectionable about them. I'd be equally or more surprised if she refused to take them. The bottle says they are for children ages 3 and up. I assume that's because they might pose a choking hazard for younger kids. I decided to use them anyway rather than send them back and get the Baby DHA liquid. I do supervise my daughter taking them to make sure she doesn't get it in her head to carry them around in her mouth all day or something. She has to chew and swallow them while I watch, and so far we haven't had any objections to that routine. The doctor says to expect it to take 2-3 months of supplementation before the rash goes away so I can't say yet whether it solved the problem.

These are not chewables at all!! Very bad taste and the capsule never dissolved. Is too bad I just opened it and I can't return it, such a waste of money, I can't understand why it says “chewables”. Unbelievable.

While these may not be flawless, they are a great product and reasonably priced. My son's mental development has always been a huge focus of mine, and as he transitions to toddler-status I wanted to replace the DHA supplementation he was getting from breastmilk and formula. This fits the bill very well. My son originally did not like the texture and taste of these supplements, but he got "used to it" quickly and without much fight. The texture is unusual, they are chewable but I would describe them as a gel capsule that is easy to pop. Also, be aware that a daily serving is 4 capsules. I supposed this is to provide a substantial dose while maintaining a very small (~1/4 inch diameter). With a toddler, I appreciate this for the minimal choking risk even if it means having to wait while he eats 4 separate capsules. The strawberry scent is nice too--just mild enough to mask most of the fishy smell DHA always brings. :-)
