After being totally fed up with getting cuts and the awkwardness of using an open scissors or an actual knife to open the literally dozens of Amazon (and other) packages we get each month, I found this - and SO glad I did! We got the pink (shorter, serrated edge, with the non-stick coating). Literally a game-changer for SO many packages and plastic-sealed products we are always opening.The "blade" is serrated, but while it cleanly and easily slices through all plastics and all cardboard boxes (even pretty thick ones) with ease, it does not cut the user, simply because you brush against the cutting edges. Even if you gently rub it across your skin, it's rough, and maybe leaves a white scrape mark, but no cutting whatsoever. Shocking given just how easily it slices though heavy-duty cardboard. Simply a brilliant product!As far as the "protective sheath," it's more of a small, flimsy shaped plastic that slips over the blade, and part of the handle. I wouldn't rely on it for anything, really (it's about the consistency of a thin plastic sandwich bag, not hard plastic). At first, I thought we'd regret not having gotten one with an actual hard protective sheath, but given that the serrated edges do no harm on their own, without applying a decent amount of pressure (but not too much, it's still easy to cut boxes/seals easily), it doesn't really need it for just sitting in a drawer, waiting for it's next use.nPersonally, I like this size, because of the leverage it offers - longer blades have greater chance of hitting something you don't intend (like if something delicate is packed towards the cutting edge of the packaging box), but this can only go so far inside, and even so, is unlikely to demage anything but the most delicate (or cardboard/paper-based) item inside the box, even if it did hit it.It's lightweight, is well-balanced in the hand, and easy to grab regardless of whether you're right- or left-handed (it's serrated on both sides). I've found it's much easier to pull towards you (which we always hated using scissors!), rather than pushing away... just seems to have much greater leverage.Really a great product - just ordered a 2nd one to have one upstairs and down.

First - Do NOT buy the smooth blade Blue Handle Cutter. It just does NOT cut anything. Smooth Blade is dulled for safety and can't cut packing tape or cardboard. Only use - scraping gum off shoe. Waste. Handle Color specific for blade type.However... The rest are serrated are definite Amazing 5 plusPROS:1. Workplace safe (no box cutter blades risks). No more work injury utility blade cuts.2. Very effective - fast at cutting packing tape, cardboard, and air pillows.3. Relative inexpensive at $7-8 considering how long they last - 2 years of daily use and still going4. Cuts a wide range of material packing tape, cardboard, and those Air Pillows !!!5. Cutting the box contents accidentially is next to zero (compared to a knife blade) - but someone is going to prove me wrong by stabbing and gouging when only light pressure is needed to work :).CONS:1. I know its a few more cents but I would pay for a dedicated Plastic Cap. Hint Hint Canary.The non-stick is a preference thing but the additional cost is marginal. It does work as keeping the tape glue from sticking but we are just as content with regular uncoated stainless steel.Lastly, yes...if you try hard enough, you can break skin with the microserrations but we have not have any accidental cuts after our office using these for over 2 years. One of the few "Dam...these are Fantastic" products. And no we did not get these free/discount for this review. Just an honest business purchase review. Enjoy.

For some time we've had the yellow-handled, black-bladed version of this.But we managed to sufficiently misplace it that we HAD to have one like it.This one doesn't have the coated blade; whether that proves significant to us remains to be seen, but, so far, it behaves exactly the same.I bought two so I'd have one in my workshop as well as the previous storage location, which was in the kitchen, next to the door to the garage, where all those Amazon Prime boxes - which we both had to open, and then break down to f-flat - arrived.Oh - we found the yellow/black one just after these arrived. So now we keep that one in aa drawer!

The cutter does just what it's supposed to do, it cuts cardboard and it's very handy to grab and use and all for a good price.

This serrated blade allows you to saw through cardboard boxes. It's sturdy, easy to use and safely cuts without worry of the blade slipping and cutting my fingers.
