Take a Paddle: Finger Lakes New York Quiet Water for Canoes & Kayaks Paperback – March 1, 2004

My husband and I love this book. It has many great features, including a map in the front that indicates all the reviewed locations, (we start here to decide how far we want to travel) different places for put in/take out, (including the amount of parking available and whether there's a fee to park) interesting facts, (ie: the release of river otters in one of the lake outlets, along with a website to go to report if you see one during your paddle) and great safety into. We are new to kayaking, so the safety info has been very valuable ... we would have found out the hard way how much a lake can change - challenge wise - if wind kicks up .... but thanks to this book there were no surprises. Our last time out was a hot day, so we intentionally chose a lake the book warned could become quite choppy. When we got there the water was like glass, but we stuck close to shore just in case and sure enough, on our way back a breeze kicked up, and it was amazing to see how quickly the lake turned into whitecaps! Since we had planned for this, we enjoyed riding the waves and getting wet from the ones that crashed over our boats ... but if it had been a cold day or if we had strayed too far offshore, this fun adventure could have turned into something far more dangerous.

Good book about kayaking in western new york

Love this book for paddling ideas, but have run into a lot of issues with boat launch areas being overgrown or gated off and rivers being choked up with water chestnut or other vegetation. Definitely a consequence of the book being almost 30 years old (from 2004). Hoping for an updated version!

Information in general is useful but the book is out of date in many areas.

Great book with great detail. As a beginner paddler looking for more places to explore, this book is very useful. I enjoy how it rates the paddle, gives approximate paddling times and exact launch sites. Looking forward to exploring more and more!

Saw this book in my co-workers office and just had to get myself one. Shows a lot of great places to kayak.

Being an outdoors person I thought I knew the better spots to go kayaking around our area. I am glad I purchased this book because I've learned some new spots to go to as well as finding out some helpful details (e.g. other good places to park, details about an area) about some of the lakes I did already visit.

The book I received was the 2004 edition, not the 2017 edition. It is a good book, just not up-to-date.
