The New Black Vanguard: Photography Between Art and Fashion

The old hip-hop cypher adage - "When you get the mic have something to say" - still holds true. When you get your one shot leave us breathless and wanting more. Every photographer here has something to say and they say it with intact individuality: specificity. Each one kisses you deeply, but differently. The book is indeed a big long love song to fashion specifically and to Black people generally. However, only one photographer uses a decidedly romantic style. Everyone else you can feel the funk, the rhythm, the pulse of photographers that feel empowered to show us something new. Showcasing photographers from the U.S., UK, Nigeria and South Africa you get diversity. While 97% of the book features fashion photos that are bold, vibrant and colorful they each depict color differently; with different depth, flair, use of pattern/texture, sense of motion, and abstraction. This book heralds a shift in our way of seeing. Inside also are wonderful essays and interviews with the artists. In total it shows us the way forward. The old saying - "nothing gets old faster than new" definitely applies to fashion, but this is a classic and "right never has an expiration date."

I really only bought this because because amazon suggested it and I liked the cover. I am so glad I did because this book is beautiful. I really enjoyed this and I have discovered many new artists and models that I may not have heard of otherwise. Great book at a great price.

I don’t write reviews; but for THIS I had to. 🔥 I was initially looking for another black publication that had immediately sold out. Still wanting something similar, I camee across this. At this affordable price point and quality I should have come for this FIRST! Amazing book and visuals, I can’t wait to dive deeper. 🙏🏾
