The great master in magical form.
This is essential reading to understand the psychological challenges of our time. No-one has better expressed the issues or given such clarity to the vexing question... why it is necessary to love.

An Excellent Read
Erich Neumann, a Jungian, has written an excellent book on the archetypal 'fear of the feminine' which has exhibited itself in humanity's psyche throughout history. This is a compelling book and a great read.

An inovative perspective
As a analytical psychotherapist I come upon many cases in which the deep issue was the fear of the opposite gender. This fear involved the way the mother unconsciously treat the the boy, and the way the partners in couple treat each-other. Erich Neumann's perspective is useful and gives a clear image for professionals and for nonprofessionals altogether.

A Veil is Lifted
Neumann's insight of this intricate psychology is impressive. I read this book a couple of years ago so I have a difficult time recalling particular passages. What did strike me though was how the fear of the feminine, is so often morphed into the blaming of 'woman.' What I took from this book is that the fear of the feminine, is the fear of coming to consciousness, a fear of developing a deeper relationship to one's self or soul. Unfortunately, this fear of the feminine principal often becomes distorted and turned into humanity's fear of 'woman.' What is feared, ultimately, is what grants freedom. In other words, like Eve, the feminine principal may seduce, but it is in the call to higher consciousness.

A lot of what's in the book is relevant even today not only in the west but any culture trying to westernize themselves. I recommend reading Amor and Psyche by the same author before reading this book. The chapter on the moon symbology was very insightful. I found Neumann more on point in this book than others.

Yeah, five stars. Awesome, awesome. Neumann uses a Jungian framework to present this critical aspect of human psychology clearly and usefully. Academic style, but way more accessible than Jung himself. If more people knew this stuff, we'd have a greater number of balanced individuals, happier relationships, and a healthier planet. It's categorized as 'Psychology/Women's Studies', but it's as much (or more) for men. Brilliant.
