Does not fit the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
It’s a very nice lens hood, but it does not fit the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, which is the lens I own. This is totally my fault as I failed to research exactly which hood fits the lens. As a result I returned it for a full refund.

An essential for the Nikon 18-55mm DX VR zoom lens
When I got my new Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens , the first thing that I did was to purchase a 52mm UV filter, more to protect the surface of the quality glass than anything. Wanted to get a lens hood, but all the dealer could offer was a rubber collapsable 52mm lens shade that screwed into the end of the filter. I asked about the one from Nikon, but he didn't have one, telling me that his rubber one was just as good. I screwed his rubber hood onto my new lens, and took a couple of shots with it at 18mm (~28mm in 35mm film camera terms), the widest position available. On viewing the images in the LCD, one could see a vignetting (image cutoff) in the corners, which was unacceptable. Didn't argue with the salesman, but declined. Had to go to another camera store in the area that day, and while there I saw an interesting product. They are billed here as a "52mm Flower Petal Lens Hood." The price seemed right for this 'cookie-cutter' style hood, so I grabbed it. This is where I should have used more common sense: The front portion of the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens is not stationary as it focuses. It rotates as the lens is focused, and when that happens at the wide setting, it causes even more vignetting than the rubber hood . The following day came online here and ordered the Nikon HB-45 Lens Hood , which is the correct one for this lens according to the Nikon site itself. During those first couple of days before it arrived, I had a couple of occasions that I wish that I had it, as some of the shots that I was taking did have a mild amount of lens flare due to the angle of my shots where the sun hit the front of the lens. Adjusted my shooting angle slightly to reduce the problem, but it was inconvenient. When the HB-45 hood arrived, the first thing that I did was to put it on in the reverse position, as some had suggested that it might not stow away in that position. Found to my relief that is did indeed fit in the reversed position, making it very convenient for packing away in the camera bag. I then put the hood on the 18-55mm VR Nikkor zoom and found that it snapped into place perfectly when the two release tabs were pushed. The hood locks into position, and rotates with the focus movement of the front of the lens barrel itself, as it should. In the weeks that I've had it so far, it has been the perfect solution for this lens. It has exhibited no vignetting whatsoever, even at the widest (18mm) range of the lens itself. Would call this a key essential for anyone wanting to get good results consistently with this "normal" zoom, which often comes as the default choice for those purchasing the Nikon D5000 DSLR , like I have, or the extremely popular Nikon D3000 Digital SLR . In either case, it's an excellent choice... once one has put a good quality UV (or skylight) filter on the lens. It might also be suggested to any dealer reading this to stock a couple of these for those of us picky customers who want the real thing for their new lenses. If I had to take any issue with this len hood it's due to the price, but having had a variety of Nikkor lenses in the 35mm SLR days, have gotten used to it. At least this one doesn't have a problem threading into the lens they way that the old metal ones did on the old Nikkor lenses. In short, it's a worthy investment for your lens that won't vignette your images, and it does travel well in the camera bag. Highly recommended. Updated 1/17/2012: Recently saw a "52mm Hard Tulip Lens Hood for Nikon DX 18-55mm" listed here on Amazon, so I took a look at it. This is exactly the type of lens hood that I described at the beginning of this review, and they do cause image cutting or vignetting, so consider yourself warned.

Good, inexpensive replacement for a lost or broken lens hood
Lens hoods are important, both for reducing flare and for protecting your lens from damage. If you lose or break a name-brand lens hood, buying the manufacturer's "genuine" replacement is typically a rather expensive solution. But since these hoods are really just mechanical "shades" and "bumpers" (and they don't optically alter the light that makes your photograph), there are no optical quality issues to be concerned with. Thus, these "third-party" replacement lens hoods work as well as the pricey originals, and cost a whole lot less! I found that this hood fit my lens perfectly.

Well Made But Pricey For a Plastic Hood
This plastic, circular hood should have come standard with the D40 or D60 18-55mm Nikon AF-S DX kit lens, but unfortunately it does not. The hood's outside moulding is of the same non-glossy textured finish matching the D60's body perfectly. It fits bayonet style over the lenses focus ring, thereby also allowing a filter and a lens cap. The hood's inner ring also has notches that grip the len's focus ring, allowing for manual focus by gripping the hood without the hood sliding. Hood may also be attached backwards onto lens for easier storage inside a camera case. If not for its high price for a plastic hood, I would give it 5 stars. ------------------------------ Note: Hood can leave a shadow at bottom end of the picture when the D60's built-in flash is used and lens is at the wide end.

Nice hood for the 18-55mm VR kit lens
Note that the HB-33 lens hood for the earlier (non-VR) version of the 18-55mm kit lens attaches in the same way, by spring-loaded clips that fit into a groove around the front of the lens, and will work perfectly well on the VR lens but can't be reversed on it because of the VR lens's larger diameter. That's the only reason you need the HB-45 hood instead on this lens. Also, to the fellow who complained that this hood is not flower-shaped: that's because the front component of the 18-55mm lens rotates when focusing. Flower-shaped hoods are only suitable for lenses with non-rotating front ends, since the "petals" must be aligned properly with the lens. I like these lens hoods. They are quick and easy to snap on or off the lens by pressing the buttons on the sides, and do their job well. Yes, it would be nice if Nikon included them with the lens as they do with most other lenses, but for $15 or so I don't mind paying for them.

Nice lens hood for 18-55mm VR
This is a good lens hood for the 18-55 VR. Unlike many other Nikon lens hoods, this one does not screw on to the unit. Instead it has a spring action that clamps the hood to the lens. There are two buttons on opposite side of the hood that you press in to put on and then release to clamp. It doesn't scratch or pose any damage to your lens and fits snuggly. The hood performs well, but it is on the small side. As a result, it does not block light as much as I was wanting. Also, don't expect this hood to protect your lens... if you are worried about that then use a UV filter. The hood performs well and should be purchases if you can get a good deal on it (don't buy at MSRP). However, don't expect miracles.

A pleasure to receive and use yet another quality accessory that pushes with a discreet `click' into place over the standard 18-55mm short zoom that came with the camera. Possibly, it's not as quite as robust as the metal hood that comes with its bigger 55-200mm brother, but it feels almost the same. It's a very accurate moulding with a four-claw mechanism, pinched gently to open then released to clamp it onto the focus ring, rather than the slots-pins-and-quarter twist usually associated with bayonet fittings. It's not a crown hood in order to accommodate the fact that the focus ring of the standard consumer lenses revolve as well as telescope, so it has to provide consistent shading for more reliable metering. That's good, but a spinoff is that the increased diameter at the end of the lens actually helps with more accurate focussing, like a lower gear with a car or bike (the focus mechanisms of the Nikkor lenses tend to be fast - not much twist for a lot of change). Very pleased, and happy to give it the full five.
