The Book of Thoth: The Wisdom of the Egyptians

Classic Egyptian Knowledge Lectures
There are a couple things in the Introduction that are contrary to what I’ve read elsewhere. He claims that all their chief gods were really one god, plus he maintains that the Pharaoh was subservient to the High Priest. This does not agree with anything else I’ve read. This book, at first glance, looks like it will delve much more into Egyptian history. I am fine with that. When he moves into theology, Brown appears to have an unpleasant view of Polytheism. As I read through this section it is easy to detect a disapproval of anything outside the Abrahamic religions. This is a pity.Brown also sees conflicts between the gods to be symbolic representations of conflicts among contending city-states.Of great interest to us is that the Ptah-Hotep and the Ke’gemni are the oldest books in the world. The text that is offered can be what we would call “The Lessons of Life”. The introductory chapters went on so long I feared ever getting to Ancient Egyptian Wisdom Literature, but here we are.The author moves on to discuss The Book of Coming Forth by Day (The Book of the Dead), and of course he discusses its history first. He says he is presenting “Sections” from The Book of the Dead. If so, he is presenting a great many sections, for this chapter is very complete; it is not a short little thing. It is of great interest to me that the next chapter covers Hermes Trismegistus. This author refutes any idea that these writings have a non-Egyptian origin. The stuff this author includes is a big plus. If you are pursuing Egyptian Knowledge, this is the place to go. It’s not precisely what I would call Egyptian Wisdom Literature, but it is still important to read. And, of course, it is interesting that the author includes a chapter on Egyptian Magic. This author also verifies that Gnosticism originated in Asia Minor before the dawn of Christianity, and that it had an Egyptian influence. He also defines some terms for us:Nous – the mindLogos – the WordPhronesis – intelligenceSophia – wisdomDynamis - strengthThe book moves on to another Hermetic track. This time it is the Greek translation of the Poimandres.

Book of Thoth
It is a book well worth reading - it sheds light on ancient history and religions. It also provides the reader with some insight regarding the origins of Egypt, the ethnicity of the people and how the Pharoahs came to be. Well worth the read.
