Loud and Brassy
I have a tribe of extremely overweight cats and my Vet has threatened legal action if I don’t put them on a diet. What a fun project for 2020, making 5 grumpy cats eat right. Well, it’s really only three that are overweight and one of which is morbidly obese (Flora Belle Lou weighs in at 20.5 lbs.!). The two other fatties are Peabody and Stubby von Bubble. Of the two non-fat cats, one is a sweet old boy, Pippy McSquirt who is slowly slipping away due to cancer. The fifth monster is Zipadee who is a teenaged menace. Anyway, you must wonder what this review could possibly have to do with a metal nautical bell. So, because I have had to stop the 24 hour a day feeding and limit the eating to twice a day, I needed to be able to alert the cats that it was dinner time. So, this bell was intended to be a dinner bell. I ring, put the food down, they eat. When they stop eating, I pick up the bowls. Flora gets low calorie and the rest get regular calorie but smaller portions and fewer feedings. Did I mention how much fun this is making my 2020? Anyway, back to the bell. It arrived and I was delighted. And it does certainly ring, that it does. But it is so loud a clang that it has terrified the cats and instead of heading for their dinner bowls when the gong is sounded, they all make a beeline for the cat door to escape the tintinnabulation echoing thru the house. This is the kind of bell you’d see Marjorie Main swinging in some 1940s film to bring the farmhands back in from the north forty for supper. So, at feeding time, I have to tinkle (pardon the expression) the bell very lightly to alert but not alarm the cats. It’s a delicate balance that would fraught Edward Albee with tension. But, the good news is that it’s working. The cats still freak out when the clanging begins but they seem to be getting it. So, the bell. It is well made and attractive and LOUD. I’m pleased with the purchase, the cats not so much so.

Great for shaming!
The pitch of this bell is a couple tones higher than the original "shame bell", for those who are wondering. Otherwise, it's a great bell for the price, especially since most other hand bells at this price point are smaller, so the pitch would be even higher. Handle was a little loose when I got it, but tightened down by hand no problem. Sturdy construction otherwise, no scratches or cracks of the wood, and plenty loud.

Just What I Was Looking For
I was looking for a relatively inexpensive, small bell to call my students in from recess. I bought two others that were less expensive and were very poorly made and started falling apart. This one looks nice, is smallish, and has a good loud ring if that is what you are looking for.
