Q: Is this edible? What to do if I want to use it for food colorant?

Yes cochineal is used as red food coloring. I do not know how to process it for food coloring. To dye, I grind it and soak in vodka, strain and then use as a dye.

Q: Is this with food grade? May I use it in sausages?

Hi, did you ever used it for your sausages ? Or you found something else better ? Was looking to use it in sausages as well.

Q: How much do you use? What is the ratio of dye to fabric?

Depends on a number of factors. What color you want to achieve, the fiber being used (a protein based fiber or cellulose) and the WOF (weight of fiber). You will have to experiment and possibly buy a microscale. Cochineal gives a lot of color for a small amount of the ground powder. As little as 3% of the WOF gives good color. 10-20% WOF will give a very strong color. Adding cream of tartar straight from your local grocery at 6% WOF to the dye bath shifts the cochineal color towards Christmas red. I start my dye bath and add a little. If I want a different color, I add more cochineal along with cream of tartar. Heat kills cochineal color so use a low simmer. I dye only Habotai silk and get colors from purple through pinks to fuchsia and rarely red (too cheap to use that much cochineal). Good luck!

Q: Can we use this on home made lipsticks?

I do know they use cochineal to color lipsticks etc and many edible items- as for the way jaquard processes this is another matter- it is always good to check with the manufacturer- as cosmetic n food grade items tend to have stricker standards- for instance mica, is commonly used for cosmetics, but jacquards mica powders say not for cosmetic use. Give then a call or search for food grade cochineal
