Not your normal shifter world
One of the things that appealed to me about the Phoenix Rising series was the authors' approach to mythological shifters. So many shifter books tackle the "normal" animal forms, and it sounded pretty interesting to get some variety.I think Wylde and Arthurs do a pretty good job at setting this up in book one. Sometimes I was a little frustrated at not knowing as much as I would like about how their shifters worked, how their world worked, but I think it's important to remember that Nix (MC) is totally new to this world.Yes, her POV is only one of several that we get, but it's still, principally, HER story, in my humble opinion. It makes sense that we'd be sharing her ignorance. Overall, this really didn't bother me. I've read books where the authors immediately narrate the foundation of world-building and others where we discover it with the characters, like Nix. I don't really have a strict preference on what's better. The difference "races" within their shifter world as well as the divide between the normal shifters and mythologicals was an interesting take. I think it gives a lot of room for the conflicts to evolve beyond just Nix and her boys. There's a lot of room here for the story to grow as Nix and her guys go against the system that's been in place for so long.I liked Nix. She's a bit inconsistent, finding her strength/courage in random spurts, but I think that may have something to do with all of the trauma she's experienced. Her life was inconsistent; in and out of foster care, living in moments of peace and fear between her father's abuse...I'd be more surprised if she was a consistently strong character because she's had to deal with so much, virtually alone. One thing I'll definitely stand by is that we are seeing the tropes that tend to populate a lot of RH books as far as the guys are concerned: a flirt, the "geek", the kinkier one, the care-giver. While it would have been a bit more intriguing to get something different, I can't say that I didn't still enjoy Wylde and Arthurs' characters.Generally, I liked Born of Embers. I DID feel a little cheated when the book ended on such a cliffhanger (right in the middle of action), but it did its job (I bought the next book).

Bloody confusing
Just no! It was so quick it was unbelievable and because of that it was unrelateable. The FLC is terrified of the father who kills her on the weekly for 12 years. In one skirmish with foster care she's raped and supposedly traumatised. She acts like she just can not escape her present while plotting her escape to a better life. When she gains her freedom, she never once checks herself, she jumps into an Uner with a stranger with all the confidence of one who has had years of therapy and overcome her past, she stands up to a bully, and later gets into a car with a bunch of strangers based on the wordnof her flatmate whom she met the other day. The story line itself is so slow to pick up that it ends on a cliffhanger. Don't get me wrong, the FLC wasn't dumb but getting turned on over the energy a guy gives off with that history just didn't feel believable I had to keep putting the book down just to get through it because I paid for the damn thing.

Born of embers
Since the fourth book in this series just got releast I decided to reread the the first books. This is still a great and suspenseful story. Nix has had a difficult life and just escaped her home. She moved as far from sunny Florida she could manage and ended up going to school in Alaska. There she is thrust into the world of shifters, learning about herself and what she is. Meeting mystical shifters that falls hard for her and want to protect her. She has to learn to trust others and survive when her past comes back to haunt her while the shifters in power would love nothing less than for Nix to be a breeding machine. Her being the only known shifter of her kind is going to make her new freedom that much harder to keep.

A personal favorite to read again and again
Put simply, this book is amazing. The characters are well thought out, the story doesn't have holes, tense is consistent throughout, etc.The story itself is captivating. Harper and Quinn pull you right in with the first line "The first time he killed me it was an accident." From there, you're guided through pain, acceptance, fear, love, and a healthy dose of sexual tension. A few kisses will leave you needing a cold shower.Though, there is a cliffhanger. But trust me. It's worth it.

Entertaining but not WOW
Let me start with saying, I enjoyed this book, and I will continue with the series. The reason I didn't rate it higher was the overwhelming insta-love. I enjoy books (even paranormal) that exhibit a somewhat realistic build to characters and relationships. The guys instantly loved the MC, and it was hard to swallow. That being said, I will finish the series because I like the plot. It was entertaining, I just wished the authors hadn't jumped on the insta-love trope train.

By far my favorite shifter book series
I have to say, the development of the characters and the intellect behind the mythical shifters is amazing. I absolutely loved how each of the characters own personalities shown through. With some books, particularly RH, I have to take notes on each of the characters to remember what they look like, their powers, etc. Not with this book! They were so well developed and introduced I was able to know each one easily. I've re-read this series a few times and am so excited for the final books to come out. There is so much amazing action in these books! I love hot and heavy scenes as much as the next RH lover, but I also appreciate how much story line there is and how intense it can become. It's truly one hell of an awesome ride! I have highly recommended this book series to so many people.

Not enough, when's book 2?
A really good read. The approach for the dark stuff is really good, though some people might find it a little bit of a sensitive area, I thought the author did a really good job of being respectful whilst not shying away from some of the grittier parts of the main characters life. I can't wait for the next one! :D

Amazing!!!
I absolutely loved this book. It was different to anything I have read in this genre. There were twists and turns, strong characters , great plot line. It does touch on the subject of abuse but it is done very well. The lead is kick arse. I would recommend to anyone and everyone.Happy reading

Addicted to this series!!
I absolutely loved this book!! And can not wait to start the next one!Throughout the whole book you know what the characters are thinking and feeling, you are able to connect with each of them individually. This is my first RH book and I am HOOKED I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the genre but isn’t too sure if it would be too full on. The tension in this book is built up through the pages and I can’t wait for it to tip in the next book!!

Not the Best, not the Worst
MehThe story and length were halfway decent, the ideas pretty good. It dragged a little in places, but overall flowed nicely. However, the characters were one-dimensional and built of overused clichés. The thing that bugged me the most is that the MC went through some horrific stuff in her past, and yet aside from some token flinches, acts like nothing happened. No PTSD, no depression, nothing. I'm not saying that I WANT them in an MC, but it would have made the character more believable and worth an emotional investment. There were also some spelling and grammar mistakes, and the thing was riddled with pop culture references which - in my opinion - both dates a story and illustrates lazy writing.

Love this book!
Just finished re-reading this book I absolutely love it and as I've already read the 2nd book I can't wait to read what happens next. Also loved the snippet at the end from 'The Valkyrie’s Princes' it was only a sneak peek yet I'm already in love, can't wait!
