Great for gaining usable skills
I love the chapters that cover basic structures and the differences that allow you to better understand what you’re looking for when foraging. The checklist system removes so much uncertainty from positively identifying your finds. Thank the Black Forager for sharing this on her Facebook page, she gives a great recommendation.

Helpful but not comprehensive
It's a great book for identifying the few mushrooms included, but not the least bit comprehensive. Didn't need to be as big as it is, however the large pictures make it easy to identify.

Very easy read Broken down into 4 variety of mushrooms
I thought I probably would not read this due to other book in library. Its very comprehendableBreaks down into 4 types of edible mushroomsAnd each style with pictures of every example. The types of characteristics to look for with pictures and best size or age for picking. If you do not know a thing about mushrooms get this book. After reading its not that difficult. It is only the types of mushrooms safe for eating. Highly recommend.

Swiss precision
I judge a non-fiction book by how well it delivers what it promises. By that measure, this one is close to perfect. The back cover says the author grew up in Switzerland. This may partly explain the meticulously organized format! This is most certainly a field reference work. Don’t look for inspiring words about nature or foraging here. It is designed with the sole but critical purpose of allowing you to positively identify the 22 most popular edible mushrooms. Like many people, I have kept my inner mushroom collector in check for fear that picking a single wrong specimen could be fatal. Mr. Schwab addresses this fear head on in a reassuring way. Where most field guides confuse with an excess of choice and detail, this one takes the unarguably practical approach of sticking to only what you can definitely prove is safe.To this end, the prose is sparse, clear and to the point. General comments about mushroom anatomy, gathering and preparation are picked clean to the essentials. Where the book truly shines, and cannot be surpassed, is in the abundant and detailed colour photographs that accompany the descriptions. Each species is the subject of a short chapter that culminates in a list of fail-safe identifying features, all of which must be satisfied to pass inspection. It may sound rigorous, but it is simple and safe!
