Use this to do emergency Ammonia detoxifying when Ammonia spikes too high for safety. It will only work for about 2 days but gives you that time to solve the problems causing it before it kills your fish. Will also dechlorinate but I frankly recommend Prime for that. I've saved many a tank of fish over the years using this when an Ammonia problem suddenly crops up. Just be aware that this is not to be a permanent solution to overcrowding or overfeeding. I highly recommend having this available for when you'll need it.Essentially, this chemical turns highly toxic NH3 Ammonia to much less toxic NH4 Ammonium.Total Ammonia test kits will show NH4 and NH3 together so your test kit won't likely show any reduction in total Ammonia even though the change from NH3 to NH4 has occurred. If you really want to test ammonia toxicity, get an Ammonia tester that only tests NH3. Those are more accurate anyway at showing toxicity. Most testers tests the total of NH3 and NH4 which isn't really accurate. The bacteria that eats NH3 also eats NH4. So this AmGuard gives you a couple of days that the toxicity is greatly reduced of existing Ammonia so your fish don't die but your bacteria still feed on it. During this time, you should be finding out what caused the high Ammonia (NH3) to fix the problem. Because after a couple of days, any NH4 not consumed by the Nitrogen Cycle bacteria, just changes back to toxic NH3 again. If your tank is dirty or you frequently overfeed or you have a dead fish or snail hidden away somewhere or if you have a lot of plant dye off or if your tank is overstocked, this is likely the cause of your high Ammonia. Not fixing the cause of the Ammonia will just mean more and more Ammonia builds up day by day until either the Nitrifying bacteria catches up and eats it or till your tank inhabitants die. Sometimes the first thing you should do is change about 50% of your tank water and dose Anti-Chlor products and refill with clean water. Then dose AmGuard and Stability (Seachem versions). Prime and AmGuard will have the effect of removing most of the toxicity temporarily and then the Stability will kick start the beneficial bacteria growth you need. Don't just keep dosing chemicals like AmGuard every day. Learn what is causing the Ammonia problem and solve it.Also I can't stress enough that you should have at least a basic understanding of the Nitrogen Cycle that takes place in good seasoned aquariums and how to get yours going BEFORE adding a bunch of fish. Then add fish gradually and manage the increased Ammonia each time before adding more. Also this task will be much easier for you if you use test kits for pH, Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates and water hardness. You can literally monitor your water as often as you feel you need to as it goes through the steps of recovery and to watch for possible hazards like Ammonia spikes. Don't assume because you have clear water that everything is perfect. Testing assures you if it is. Liquid tests work better than the strips. Only use the strips for quick checks as they are sometimes not that accurate. You really should invest the money to get a good liquid test kit like APIs master kits.I personally use many of the Seachem products like Prime, AmGuard, Stability, and Pristine to name a few. When properly dosed, they have saved lives of my fish when disasters strike. But you'll need test kits to see where the problem lies. And don't use them all the time as a crutch. Having well-kept tanks with complete Nitrogen Cycles will make the biggest difference in your aquarium creatures survival.

SAVED MY TANK, Immediately effective!!
Unfortunately overloaded the biofiltration in my planted tank and added too many fish at once/overfed/overcleaned. I thought the existing filter could handle it but poof, big while cloud one day. Well I figured the ammolock I had would help tide the tank over until the bacteria caught up but it kept going up and my poor fish were gasping for air/overstressed. I looked on the bottle and my ammo lock was expired since 2017! So, I immediately I went to the local petco to pick up a small bottle of AmGuard and when i came back, some of my fish were worse off near death while my ammo levels were off the charts. I quickly did the expert level dose in my tank and my motionless fish revived themselves within seconds.. It bought me time, I immediately did a 50% water change and the fish looked so much better and everyone survived the ammo stress. Over the next 72 hours I did 50% water changes daily cleaning the gravel and curbed feedings until my ammo levels got under control and used this to keep the fish alive and happy while the tank cycled. Now my tank is near cycled with my nitrates finally rising. I will always keep a non-expired bottle of this stuff on hand, great for emergency use!

Ammonia crisis? Buy this.
Excellent product. Definitely the best ammonia treatment out there. Why? Because it does not simply reduce ammonia to its less toxic form, like most treatments. AmGuard binds it to neutralize the poisonous effects of ammonia, but still allows your filter's bacteria to utilize it and multiply -- which is the only way to get out of an ammonia crisis. When you reduce ammonia to its less toxic form, not only can your filter not utilize it, but you also increase the pH of your aquarium, which can kill your fish just as easily as ammonia toxicity.

Excellent ammonia detoxifier chlorine/chloramine as well
this is an excellent product to manage ammonia until you do water changes (lasts 48 hours) it binds the molecules to make the ammonia safer (does not not kill nor remove it - only water changes in an established setup or time in a cycling setup) a little bit goes a long way.

Good for Detoxification of Ammonia
I used this product to detoxify my freshwater fish tank. It seems to have worked well as my fish are Alive in the face of an ammonia level between one and three. Very strong so have to be careful re dosing
