Daily Bread: What Kids Eat Around the World

Great photos and stories on a fascinating subject.
Daily Bread beautiful illustrates with great photos and fascinating text how different the diets are for children all around the world. I found most fascinating the flip on the assumption that children in poorer countries would have worse diets. Instead, the book illustrates quite the opposite, with fascinating insight into why this is so. A terrific book!

More Californian Children than expected, and obese.
Thought this book would represent more parts of the world. Disproportionate number of children from California, and many were obese. It looks beautiful, but I expected more.

You must get this book!
Gregg Segal not only has created a record of what children are consuming but he sparks conversations that must be had to save our children from eating themselves to chronic disease. As a physician I was mesmerized by the photos and discussed them with my own 3 grown children. It is the only book in our living room. It should be in every physician’s waiting room! Phenomenal job and would highly recommend it!

A Picture is worth a Thousand Word
Years ago, I came across "What the World Eats", which is almost identical to this book's format. It was a watershed moment for me, as a typical Western consumer, to see where my food choices had evolved to. Just for fun, our family placed our groceries on the table in front of us and took a snapshot. I noticed all the packaged, non nutritional items that stood in contrast to the typical third world counties meager diet. I felt deeply ashamed and vowed to pay more attention to my food choices. This book takes a similar approach with a kid friendly viewpoint. It's a book that is meant to be "seen" and grasped by the right side of our brain. We can talk and intellectualize all day long, but ultimately we grasp the truth set forth in this book with our hearts.

Beautifully creative photos and inspiring text
The book Daily Bread contains an amazing collection of photos depicting the vast range and colours of food eaten by children in different cultures around the world. The text to each photo creates a cultural and social context of the childrens' lives -- refreshingly simple and never judging. I love this book because it illustrates that art can be a great medium to communicate pressing global health issues -- the transition away from healthy, nutritious and freshly cooked meals in some countries/regions/families to increasingly processed and junk foods. Gregg Segal's points in his introduction are well taken: he emphasizes that if we want to tackle the double burden of malnutrition -- hunger and obesity -- people around the globe must have access to high quality and nutritious foods!

Gutes Buch
