This should be required reading in school...
As a fan of John Wayne movies my whole life I naturally was curious about the man that almost everyone has an opinion on. After all, he played larger than life character in movies so I figured he was just a gifted actor. The more I have learned about the man the more I have realized I was wrong. Wayne wasn't the greatest actor, he was just a character that was larger than life. In the movies he just had to be himself. That is what I enjoy so much with this book of quotes, it shows you how much this man had a brain, loved America, believed in hard work, and loved his family. Many people would do well to learn from this stubborn man. Being stubborn can be a good thing, and in his case it was a great thing. This book is a fantastic read. I confess I read it so fast that I felt disappointed at the end. I was hoping it would just keep going I guess. The good news there is I can go back and reread it. I highly recommend this book. The quotes are very good. Many "enlightened" folks would read this and think it was from a simpleton. That is because they can't wrap their own heads around the idea of a simple solution to anything. To them anything straight, simple, or full of logic is a bad thing. They equate it to being stupid in essence.I personally think that anyone who reads this book with an open mind and thinks about what messages are implied, not just said, will gain a lot to think on.

Great
I have been a John Wayne fan since I was a kid. I have been inspired by the image in always projected both on and off the screen. I not always agreed with his views but I greatly admire the way he was willing to take a stand for his principals regardless of the cost. I firmly believe while he never served in the military he was a true American hero and was totally love this country and his family. He was the type of man we could all take a page from his life to enhance our own character and the author did a great job in creating a picture of this great American hero by using his own words as well as the words of his friends and family to show a strong and good man who believed doing the right thing. The author also used the Dukes own words to show that qhit all of his sucess he never himself to seriously.

A "Must Have" for any fan of the Duke
I loved this book, though it was much smaller than I expected. I read it all the way thru as soon as I got it. Just reading the quotes tells you so much about the man. I couldn't help but think about what he would be saying if he was around today with all that is going on in our country. This is a "Must Have" for any fan of the Duke. If you weren't a fan, you will learn a lot about how to live life from an extraordinary man.

Read this book and Duke in his own words.
This is the way his story should be told. The person who lived it is the best person to tell it. I really liked this one because it was well rounded.I'm also reading one told through correspondence. Things he wrote and notes, telegrams, and letters both written by him and to him. Either one will leave you saying to yourself that John Wayne was everything you thought he was and more.

MAY WE ALL BE WORTHY OF HIS REGARD
When Nathan Hale was standing before his English Captors, they asked him to recant his rebellion and pledge his honor to the King. We should all know those immortal words " I regret that I have but one life to give for my country." Those of us who are the living, breathing! Guardians of those words, know that what he really said is " The hell I will Pilgrim." Duke, I am Looking forward to meeting you on the other side of that great river. SFC WILLIAM B SMITHUS ARMY RETIRED, see you soon.

A true hero, gentleman and patriot
I've always liked John Wayne the actor and reading this book reinforces his image as a strong but gentle man, kind, sensitive, and "real" ... nothing phoney. His honesty and patriotism should be the yardstick by which everyone should live their life. RIP Duke.

I really enjoyed his movies all through my 60 years of seeing him act.Outside the movies he helped a lot of people; but he seemed to bea really opinionated bastard.

love and patriotism for this country was deep and dear ...
Though an actor, The Duke was, is and always will be a true American Hero. The true character and genuine feelings of an individual penetrates through his acting and the characters he portrays. This man's real concern, love and patriotism for this country was deep and dear in his heart.I have truly been blessed to grow up in the flickering lights of the movie theater, projecting, bigger than life, a real example of patriotism,, honor and honesty. A real hero for all to look up to!!!!
