Totem Poles: An Illustrated Guide (Museum Note No. 3)

This is an informative guide about the history of the totem pole. The photos are mostly black and white, but the photos are also mostly historic, so the quality is not modern. However, the photos depict historic totem poles, and I greatly appreciate being able to see these native artworks.

This book is totally worthless. I sent it back for a refund. All the photos inside are black and white. It is very cheaply done and there are no instructions for carving ... they just "talk around" the subject.

This is an excellent book for those who would like to carve totems. It has beautiful pictures and even drawings of patterns you can use when you carve. Well worth the price!

This is a basic guide to totem poles with pictures and text. It helps reader understand and appreciate this unique art work which defines a group in terms of animal or fish and the combination. It gives brief note in Indian cultures in terms of wealth, family, mythology, ceremony and carving. It highlights the different functions such as house frontal posts, memorial or commemorative poles, mortuary poles, grave markers, and welcome figures.This book gives the basics so that readers would be able to understand and interpret the masterpieces and the motifs.

As an art teacher intending to use this book as a visual tool in my class, I was hoping that there would be plenty of high quality pictures to support the text, only to be disappointed. There should have been more pages to view prior to purchase and a much better description of what to expect. The title is misleading- it is not an illustrated guide at all.

I bought this for a friend who has a large tree trunk in her garden. I am sure she will get inspiration from it.
