A Fun Book for a Struggling Reader
My 9 year old daughter struggles with reading so whenever she cans she avoids reading. This was one of the first books that she actually got excited about reading and asked for more like it. She comprehended the story and when I asked her to tell me about the story she could. I am so happy to have found the Salem Hyde books. Because of this I was able to find her other similar graphic novels that she has enjoyed reading. Now we are waiting for book 3 of the series to come out in October '14.

1st grader loves these!
My daughter's name is Salem so when she found a series with her name in it at the library she was hooked! She asked for the whole series for Christmas so that is why I bought them. They are written kind of like a comic book, not the traditional chapter or story book. so just FYI. I haven't not read the stories myself but she is 6 and does just fine with them.

Nice, enjoyable ride
Very enjoyable. It's not often you see a graphic novel that's so focused on situational humor, but here it is. Will look for more "Salem Hyde" books in the series.

A wonderful book
Salem Hyde is a new character on the young reader scene, and this book has wonderful characters, a fun, dramatic problem and a great lesson to be learned. The interactions between Salem and his new "counsel" are hilarious. My kids really enjoyed reading this book, right after I finished it myself!

A Gift of Laughter
It's funny, and punny, I think I liked it better than the recipient did. I'm still reading it (it was a Christmas present for someone in the same household).

I'm too old to enjoy this one. Nice art, though!
I'm not the intended target, I believe.I quite like the two-color printing: green and black were really nice together. I also find the main protagonist well-drawn but a bit insufferable; while the cat was ugly but also an interesting addition.I didn't like the story. It was a bit too simple and it revolved around words. I usually like this but it didn't work for me in this fumetto. I also think that this will be quite untranslatable: there are too many puns on words and jokes related to homophones (that's not a bad word, it just means that two words that are spelled differently are pronounced in the same way).If I had read this as a kid, I would have probably liked it way better. I won't continue with the series.

we find it a perfect middle ground
We've got our 5 year old niece hooked on Salem Hyde, as a first introduction to comics for her. She cannot put these books down! As adults who read a ton of comics, we find it a perfect middle ground. Some lovely illustration, full page spreads, mixed with a lot of creative uses of panels that make it really engaging to read and come back to discover a little bit more about the characters. The characters are interesting, funny and have a progressive edge to them that makes this the perfect book for a kid who wants something a little different that challenges to traditional story characters. The book is ridiculously silly, but with a good kind heart, with a story that is twisting but easy to follow with a few difficult words to get kids thinking.

Good silly book with nice theme of friendship
My 8-year-old daughter liked this graphic novel a lot and is eagerly awaiting the next ones to come out. Salem Hyde is a funny impulsive girl who happens to be a witch in an otherwise normal town. Her parents hire Whammy, cat companion, to keep her out of trouble and give her more control over her abilities, but the two don't get along at first, and Salem is a hard girl to keep out of trouble. The magical training scenes are particularly entertaining. Can you guess the design flaw in flying on a vacuum cleaner? Will Salem and Whammy be able to stick it out with each other?I was a bit disappointed that my daughter finished the 96-page book in a single sitting. Also I would have liked color illustrations. They are pen and ink with green and grey shading. However, there is a nice Calvin and Hobbes flavour to this children's book and a nice message about friendship. My daughter has reread it twice alread, so it looks like it will have staying power on our bookshelf at home. I think it was worth the purchase after all.
