Players First: Coaching from the Inside Out Hardcover – April 15, 2014

As a card carrying member of the Big Blue Nation, I wrote a review of this book not to Coach Cal, but to Penguin Press. I received a notice months ago concerning the release of this book, with the promotion that I could receive an autographed bookplate if I pre-ordered from several vendors, including Amazon. The only thing needed was a copy of the invoice sent to Penguin Press at a provided email address. So, I ordered the book and sent the both the invoice and the order document from the Amazon site. It was sent three times to that address, and the email bounced back each time as undeliverable. So I wondered, what was the deal? No way to contact the company thru its website, but did send a message thru the Penguin Press Facebook page and this review.TODAY I GOT MY AUTOGRAPHED BOOKPLATE! Thanks for listening, Penguin Press!I've read the book, and it's great. A real inside look at college basketball, some of its highs and lows, as well as a sneak peek at Coach Cal and his thinking. And an autographed bookplate to seal the deal! I give the book and Coach Cal 5-stars, and now give Penguin Press 5-stars as well.

I am absolutely happy with the book, I read on the internet these days and I have only read a few chapters. The more I read about John Calipari, the more I respect him. His players know he will be tough on them, but he gets them ready for the NBA! Normally from a year in college, they go on to the League and millions in income and benefits for themselves and their families. Outstanding coaches and TV coverage has made such things possible!Anthony Davis may be his best player yet and Coach Cal believes he will prove to be a cut above other League members.

In Players First Coaching from the Inside Out..., Coach Calipari takes a deep dive into his just completed five years at the University of Kentucky. If you are a committed Kentucky fan as I am, you will enjoy the in depth, behind the scenes look at the Calipari program. If you are just a general college basketball fan, you might find the material too specific to the University of Kentucky and never get engaged with the book. The issue of greatest general engagement is most probably the controversy that surrounds the "one and done" element of college basketball. Coach Calipari does offer a compromise solution of extending the NBA minimum age by one year. That solution, while not perfect, is most probably preferable to the current rule. March Madness might become even more exciting with another 12 or so elite athletes involved.

John Calipari is mostly known for his excellent abilities as an elite recruiter. I liked the parts of this book where he addresses the ways he works with his athlete to motivate the All-Americans he brings to Kentucky. If you are looking for a book that goes into coaching leadership, motivation, and designing excellent practices, Championship Performance Coaching goes into much greater detail on these topics.

I know nothing about college basketball. I enjoy sports and enjoy hearing from people who love people and love to serve. That’s what you read about in Player’s First.There are more than two sides to every story and I’m sure that others have different opinions about Coach Cal, UK and college basketball in general. None of those will detract from the knowledge, enthusiasm and insight that I received from this book.

I enjoy the book, but the cover was sent all dirty. Like it was kept in a pile of dirt for awhile and it is scraped so it is not something that I can wipe off. I cherish my books so I like them to look pristine [at least the outside cover - I typically take them off while I am reading and when I am done I put them back on so they look nice again] so it was discouraging to open this package and see it was all dirty. It was also a gift, so I kept apologizing that my boyfriend received a dingy book.

It was not quite what I was expecting. It definitely doesn't have the wisdom of a book from Wooden. Some of the stories are neat but I felt that techniques Calipari uses beyond hard work were lacking. The part I learned the most about (not very useful but cool to know) was the rules of the NCAA and his suggestions about changes to encourage students to stay in school and protect their futures.

Compré este libro para regalárselo a mi hermano que es entrenador superior de baloncesto y tras su lectura me ha comentado que es un volumen que le ha dejado interesantes enseñanzas y que se trata de un libro muy recomendable.
