American Victorian Costume in Early Photographs (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

I run across a lot of photographs as I research my family tree. This book is indispensable for helping date antique photographs.

I'm a Theatre Costume Design student, and in theatre accuracy is key. When researching the fashion of a certain historical time period, ideally you want to be able to look at the physical garments worn at the time. However, unless you are lucky enough to have a huge museum or costume collection at your disposal, that's pretty much impossible.Books like this, which feature collections of period photographs, are the next best thing. How can you doubt the reliability of the fashions depicted in a photograph when it was taken in the actual time period you're researching?This book is an excellent resource and I highly recomment it to anyone interested in historical costumes.

I purchased this book as research into period dress for a novel. It contains helpful descriptions of the fashion trends in each decade and the pictures do give some idea of what people were wearing, but most of this information is available for free on the Internet. It's nice to have a resource that I can pull from my shelf and refer to regularly, but this book did not turn out to be the one. Instead, I recommend "Victorian Fashions & Costumes from Harper's Bazar 1867-1898," edited by Stella Blum.

I love the Victorian turn of the century and this graphic book shows what the people were wearing during those time with the actual photographs from that time period. I used it under the advisement from Dungeons and Dragons game designer.

This was very helpful. It not only depicts clothing of the well-to-do but that of the not so well off as well.

If you are starting to do living history (costumed interpretation), then this book is for you. It will help to guide you through what people wore during Victorian period by showing you photos of people from that time in their finery.

I bought this book to add to my collection of books that I have regarding antique fashions.This reference guide is informative and has many (black & white) photos to look at.I'm glad I bought it.

Sometimes the only way to pinpoint a date is to look at the clothing your relatives are wearing! Fun and interesting resource.

Sencillamente perfecto como todos las publicaciones de la empresa Dover, aunque algo fino el libro pero aun asi el contenido genial al menos a nivel personal. Recomendado otro mas para la familia.

ヨーロッパにくらべ、若干地味に感じるが、アメリカのヴィクトリア時代の、ポートレイトを主にまとめた写真集。1840年～1890年までを、10年ごとにまとめてあるので、微妙なスカートの変化(フープでふくらませていたとか、フープ無しとか)が、わかり楽しめる。
