A good buy
I have alot of language tapes I like to listen to and I also enjoy talk radio on am and NPR on fm. This walkman fits the bill. The sound quality is good and the tapes play easily. Also the rewind option is really handy for the tapes. I found the sound quality improved when I used higher price earphones I had; however the earphones provided were acceptable. It is a little bulkier than I would like but it fits into a pants pocket and most shirt pockets. It comes with a protective case which provides good protection (I have dropped mine a few times while walking and it had no damage due to the protective case.) It takes a little time to pre-set stations. However if you're into computers and such you probably will do ok (i'm old school baby boomer so it could be me). If you don't want to preset stations the manuel control works fine. This model also has a separate button for the government weather channel; which is helpful for incoming storm warnings etc. Overall a good buy for the money if you play casettes and listen to the radio.

Always dependable Sony .
This tape player has very good sounding AM/FM headphones . It has a Bass Boost setting too. Changes from AM to FM to Cassette player with the push of a button.Change radio stations with the push of a button. The multiple presets are great . It uses one AA battery that will last almost a week . When camping I use a small external Philips brand speaker that plugs right in - great for kicking back after a long hike with out the hassle of a headphone cable keeping you tethered to your tunes. This is my second Sony Walkman . My first one lasted 5 years until I drop it on some rocks (accidentally). I Love my Walkman and you will too ! Amazon is the place to buy it . Yes, I recommend Sony WM-FX290W Walkman to any buyer that is looking for the best Cassette player on the market. Steven M - Washington State 2/19/2014

AM FADES IN & OUT
The tape deck works well & the sound is good. The FM works well although it does not have a lot of range - I can't get stations within an hour of where I live. The button to change stations is not easy to operate as I have the unit usually in my pants pocket & I have to fool around to change stations & the volume wheel can be hard to locate or operate quickly as the headphone cord can be turned that almost covers it. But the BIGGEST PROBLEM is the AM which fades in & out (& is annoying) as I take steps or turn - & this on local stations. It also does not pick up an AM station very well located about 1 1/2 hours away that I had programmed on my previous SONY Walkman where it worked reasonably well when pointed in the right direction.

Nice walkman.
A lot of great qualities for this walkman and the price of it compared to others.I would've gave it a five star had it had a place to plug an adaptor in to save on batteries but it does only require one battery. Also the clip is not built onto the walkman itself but instead it is on a case that Sony sends with the walkman and it's a little tight to fit the Walkman into the case.I just put the Walkman in my pocket instead. It plays well and has great sound.

Every thing I'd hoped it would be
The tone is great, it does have a rewind button, there is no static, there is no skipp'n, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but did manage to figure out(with the instructions) how to program different stations. I use it to pick up my walk'n pace by listen'n to Mexican music: the cumbias, corrido's,& salsa. The radio station near Fresno CA. is 91.50. Thats radio bilinguie. Its got stations all over USA. Went tp thrift stores and so far all three stores had old cassette tapes.different prices at diff, stores from .25 - 75 cents. Got Anne Murrays, Eagles & real old ones like:Gona take a Sentimental Journey from the 40ies.I did find 4 Mexican Music cassettes. Only one thing wrong...I was enjoying the music so much that I walked 2 miles over my limit, & too fast. Did 4 miles in 1hr was sick for 2 days- I forget I'm 71 1/2 yrs old

Perfect for me.
This is exactly what I needed for my workout tape. I had a workout tape that I use for my cardio workouts and I dropped my old Sony Walkman and the tape feature no longer operated even though the radio still worked. The walkmans that play tapes are no longer available - they have been discontinued by Sony, so I was so pleased I was able to find one on Amazon. The only down side is since it is a discontinued item - you pay a lot more for it than the original manufacturers retail price. I hope I don't drop this one! I received the Walkman very quickly and it was in the original packaging - never opened. Everything worked perfect. Only thing Amazon did forget was to put in the return documentation, which I didn't need in this case, because I am not returning and have no issues with the product. I'm a happy customer.

I have it at last
When I was in college back in the 70's, I was deep, deep into my music. My choice was the the cassette player. That's when I first heard of the Walkman. It was the first and the best of all the cassette players to follow. But I was of the low income level. I couldn't afford a Walkman. So for years I settled for off brand players that possessed no quality and had a lot of defects. Brands like Colby, and that God- awful Jensen had me just tossing my money right in the trash. I felt trapped in "cassette player hell" until Amazon offered me the one, the only, the first and best of them all....The Sony Walkman.!! I was thrilled. I jumped at it. For the first time in over 30 years I'm experiencing true high quality stereo sound from both the radio as well as the tape I popped in Yes, this is everything I'm looking for in true stereo music. I see that Sony has discontinued making the Walkman. That's too bad. I'm planning on buying a back-up player. I suggest anyone whose still into cassette tape and not into Ipods and all that new tech stuff need to get them a Sony Walkman....while they are still available brand new. 'cause when they're gone...they are GONE!

Zero stars
I bought a cassette player that a cassette did not fit in the opening. Opening too small. Another great China product!
