Clint Eastwood flick and he directed 5 stars for sure

Another David Baldacci book made into a intriguing movie

An oldie but goodie Eastwood film.A robbery is taking place and unexpected events follow involving a high profile politician. Murder, cover-up, assassination. Reminds me of all the chaos going on in our government today. A great cast and the story flows smoothly dealing justice at the end in a delicious twist. This is another movie I have owned on VHS and chose to replace on DVD.

A little cheesy, but a good old movie with good clean suspense

Very good movie

In the midst of the White House Trilogy of scandals for 2013, this movie just seemed to fit the bill. As L. Shirley said in the headline of her review for this, it's "Clint vs. The White House...Who Will Win?...Well, You Know!"This is your typical Clint Eastwood character--not someone especially filled with virtue--especially the virtue we'd expect to find in a hero. He is his usual rough, cantankerous, "do not bother me" and "do not bother with me" loner that he is so good at portraying. Falling back on his skill as one of the top six known thieves, in the midst of a huge heist he finds himself face-to-face with being a witness to murder by the US President and two of his Secret Service agents. Although his initial instinct is to run and skip the country, his sense of justice for the victim and the criminal, that he has always portrayed in his own peculiar way, keeps him set as he unravels the "how to" bring the President and his staff to justice. He makes progress in a way that Washington never could or would with such an issue, as we are witnessing! It's all filled with suspense--something he does so well, especially as Director. It seems a good morale-booster also at this time.His somewhat heartless attitude towards life, family, etc. gets overcome in the process of this whole affair. What could be seen as cynical and selfish, with obvious shortage of affection in the sparse interactions that have made up his relationship with his daughter over decades, kind of explodes into the deep moving love for her that has remained hidden, but now has the opportunity to move to the surface. Yeah! The same kind of smokescreen we've seen before, but when cleared away reveals his true character, and what his ultimate priorities and values are.It's a great movie. It's a thriller! I put it up there with some of his best.I have always loved Clint Eastwood's acting. I now love his directing. This is another one of his movies like Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition) in which we get both!

The quality is not the best. I'm hesitant to buy DVD's anymore because you never know what quality you will get and if it's been rerecorded.

Normalerweise spielt CLINT EASTWOOD in seinen Thrillern ja meistens den taffen Gesetzeshüter, der unkonventionell und ohne Viele Worte den bösen Jungs den Garaus macht. In „Absolute Power“ wechselt er zwar die Seiten, ist aber trotzdem der Gute, der die Bösen zur Strecke bringen möchte.Wie immer macht er das auf die ihm so eigne Art, ohne großer Worte, dafür aber sehr effektiv und gründlich! Das sind die Rollen, in denen man EASTWOOD sehen möchte, das ist sein Image, das hat er perfekt drauf.In „Absolute Power“ spielt er den Einbrecher „LUTHER WHITNEY“, der während eines Einbruchs ungewollt Zeuge eines Mordes wird. Das Opfer ist die Gattin des Hausbesitzers, der Mörder kein Geringerer als der Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika …..Die Story selber ist nicht sonderlich raffiniert, wurde aber verdammt gut umgesetzt. EASTWOOD, der nicht nur die Hauptrolle spielte, sondern auch Regie führte, hat mit ganz einfachen Mitteln einen spannenden Thriller inszeniert. Er macht das nicht reißerisch oder mit spektakulären Actionszenen, er macht das ganz ruhig und unaufgeregt, er stellt die Geschichte und seinen Helden in den Fokus.CLINT EASTWOOD spielt das wie immer sehr souverän, ebenso GENE HACKMANN, der als fieser US-Präsident „ALLEN RICHMOND“ voll überzeugen kann. Dem liegen solche Rollen einfach, das ist so ein Charakterkopf, den kannst du in sympathischen, so wie in unsympathischen Rollen immer bringen.Auch LAURA LINNEY hat mir als „LUTHERS“ Tochter „Kate“ sehr gut gefallen, ebenso wie ED HARRIS (Seth Frank) und SCOTT GLENN (Bill Burton). Die vermeintlichen „Nebenrollen“ wurden sehr prominent besetzt, was dem Film sehr gutgetan und ihn zusätzlich aufgewertet hat.Mein Fazit: „Absolute Power“ ist ein grundsolider Thriller, der handwerklich erstklassig und sehr routiniert gemacht wurde. EASTWOOD macht keine Experimente, er setzt auf die Story und sich selber, er verzichtet auf unnötige Action und Gewalt … klasse Film, kann ich nur empfehlen!

Der alternde Luther Withney (Clint Eastwood) gilt aufgrund seiner Vergangenheit in Polizeikreisen als verschlagener, kaum greifbarer Meisterdieb. Immer mal wieder saß er im Knast, doch man ist sich sicher, dass er für die meisten seiner Diebstähle nie belangt werden konnte. Inzwischen geht man davon aus, dass er sich zur Ruhe gesetzt hat. Seine Frau ist inzwischen verstorben und seine Tochter Kate (Laura Linney), inzwischen Staatsanwältin, will nichts mehr von Ihm wissen.Luthers neuer Coup, den er monatelang vorbereitete, ist der Einbruch in die Villa des betagten Millionärs Walter Sullivan (E.G.Marshall), der im Ausland weilt. Dort liegen wertvolle Juwelen und jede Menge Bargeld. Luther hat jedoch nicht eingeplant, dass Christie (Melora Harding), die wesentlich jüngere Frau von Sullivan nicht mit ihrem Mann gemeinsam verreiste, sondern die Abwesenheit dafür nutzt, ihren Liebhaber, den US-Präsidenten Allan Richmond (Gene Hackman) zu empfangen. Luther muss sich dadurch in der nebenliegenden Kammer verstecken, durch einen durchsichtigen Spiegel kann er dem anfänglichen Liebesspiel zuschauen. Der US-Präsident steht dann zunehmend auf harten, brutalen Sex und aufs Schläge verteilen. Die Frau wehrt sich und die Situation eskaliert total. Durch die schreie des Präsidenten, als das Opfer Oberhand gewinnt, stürmen zwei Männer vom Secret Service, Bill Burton (Scott Glen) und Tim Colin (Dennis Haysbert) das Schlafzimmer und erschiessen die Frau, die gerade mit dem Brieföffner den Präsidenten attackiert. Ein paar Augenblicke später ist auch Gloria Russell (Judy Davis), Stabsschefin des weissen Hauses, zugegen und es wird beschlossen die Sache zu vertuschen, zumal Sullivan und der Präsident die besten Freunde sind.In letzter Sekunde entdecken die Schurken den Zeugen Luther, doch der kann entkommen.Für den ermittelnden Police Detective Seth Frank (Ed Harris) sieht alles zuerst so aus, dass ein Einbrecher von der Hausherrin entdeckt wurde, so dass sie zum Schweigen gebracht werden musste. Luther selbst will sich aufgrund der Brisanz seiner Beobachtung ins Ausland absetzten. Doch es kommt anders...Clint Eastwood drehte "Absolute Power" im Jahr 1997 und der Film gehört zusammen mit "Ein wahres Verbrechen" und "Cold Blood" zu seinen weniger populären Alterswerken. Dabei sind alle drei Filme äusserst gut geglückt und unterstreichen Eastwoods große Gabe einen guten Thriller mit geglückter Konstruktion zu machen. Wie gewohnt setzt Eastwood dabei auf gute Figurenzeichnung - dafür steht im ein hochkarätiges Ensemble zur Verfügung. Allen voran auch klasse besetzte Nebenrollen von Judy Davis als Stabschefin des Horrors oder der großartige E.G. Marshall (unvergessen als hochintelligenter Staatsanwalt in "Zwang zum Bösen") in seiner letzten Rolle.Eastwood war damals bereits 68 Jahre alt und als Gegenpart besetzte er den gleichaltrigen Gene Hackman. Schon alleine in dieser Hauptrollenkonstellation lässt sich erkennen, dass ein Thriller mit alten Männern in der Hauptrolle in der heutigen Filmlandschaft eigentlich unmöglich wäre...es sei denn man ist Eastwood und traut sich das zu. Dass dies prächtig funktioniert, ist das grosse Geheimnis des Ausnahme-Filmemachers Eastwood.Ein paar kleine logiklöcher stören das Vergnügen an diesem old-school Thriller überhaupt nicht. Eastwood würzt den Film auch mit fiesen Attacken gegen das politische Establishment.Während in anderen US-Filmen der Präsident immer verklärend dargestellt wird, bezeichnet Eastwood den ersten Mann im Staat als "Jammerlappen".Beste Szene ist der Tanz von Hackman und Davies auf dem Bankett.

Luther Whitney is a professional thief, he also happens to be exceptional at it. During a carefully planned burglary at the home of wealthy Walter Sullivan, Whitney is disturbed to hear voices coming from outside the room he is in. Hiding in a secret room he observes from behind a two-way mirror the cheating wife of Sullivan with her lover for the night. Whitney is further startled to find that the man in the company of Mrs Sullivan is none other than the current president of the United States, Allen Richmond. He is then horrified to witness the couples union getting out of control, Richmond starting to get far too heavy handed with the lady in question. Things spiral out of control and during the fight Mrs Sullivan goes to stab the President with a paper knife, thus giving the entering secret service agents no choice but to gun her down. Sensing a political scandal, the agents and Richmond's Chief Of Staff, Gloria Russell decide to cover the incident up. Whitney, after making his escape, doesn't know what to do, who's going to believe a renowned thief, but crucially, will he be allowed to live if he comes forward? Dastardly goings on and government cover ups are merely part of what is going on in the search for Absolute Power.Absolute Power is a fine film, but I'm a little biased because I really like the pacing of the picture and more importantly, I like the plot. It's true that the film fails to capitalise on its first hour set up, we are brought into Whitney's world and given reminders of dodgy doings that blight so many countries political machinations, but then director Clint Eastwood and his team fall in to the trap of adding strands that merely alter the viewers attention span, thus taking us away from what was a concrete and wholly engrossing plot arc. But with a truly diamond cast of professionals in the piece, the film manages to stay the good side of good, tho the ending is one that is sure to be a divisive one for any prospective first time viewers. Eastwood stars as Whitney and is joined by Gene Hackman (President Allen Richmond), Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, Judy Davis and E.G. Marshall. William Goldman adapts from David Baldacci's popular novel, and Eastwood's direction is the usual steady professional job that he would further enhance down the line with the likes of Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby.Should have been a truly great political based thriller/drama, but as it is, I settle for it being a way above average one that has far too many good points to ever see it as being below average or bad. 7/10
