Maybe if it came with any instructions or was not printed only in Chinese. I had no clue what to do with this until I googled it. Actually thought the strings were like holding the dials from moving..,thank goodness I did not cut off which I thought about.

Poor quality
When we received the compass, the needle was moving erratically. The problem may be just with the item we received but we decided to send it back.
