Many ways great
We are a homeschool family and used this book as an introduction and guide for Texas history unit study. The writing is simple enough for 1st graders and interesting and factual enough for middle schoolers. Unless you have spent time studying Texas history, you will discover and learn new facts. This allowed us to break the book into units and explore each segment with more appropriate age oriented detail. By following the story, we were able to explore the early beginnings of Texas from a historically accurate timeline. The illustrations are beautiful. They serve as good talking points and reinforcements for younger readers and good works of art for older readers. Also, it is just a fun read. This doesn't feel like a picture book. The quality of the illustrations make It more like an artistic guide through a good biographical essay. Highly recommend

Great teaching tool
I read this book to my class of first graders while studying Texas History and the Alamo. They were facinated by his story. With guided discussion, the book is appropriate for primary chldren and the illustrations are breathtaking. One of my student's mother told me that her son raved about the book when he got home from school and wanted her to buy a copy for his personal library right away!

Sam's Our Man
Sam lived in my county, so I take a particular interest in him. His home place is presently threatened with development and having his family 's pioneer home site bulldozed, so I'm looking for means of getting his spot preserved. This book may help!! It's colorful and factual.

Good for young readers
Good for young readers to learn about people in history. The artistic drawings show the young child the story, along with the reading of the story.
