Charlie Chaplin is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood history, known for his comedic films that are largely based on the struggles of the lower-class life. He is also known for his controversial beliefs that often challenged the ideas of sexual politics in his time. Chaplin was born in England in 1889 and moved with his family to the United States in 1892. While living in America, he started performing in small vaudeville houses and soon became one of the most popular performers in the country. In 1914, he established his own film company with which he produced five films. The following year, he began making silent films that were completely without dialogue. These films are known for their comical characteristics that are based on Chaplin's physical comedy. Some of his later films were critically acclaimed for their social commentary about poverty, war, and politics during World War I. After a long career as a filmmaker, Chaplin retired from acting and became a political activist who opposed fascism and championed social reform. In 1975, he died at age 88 from complications resulting from a stroke. Many critics view him as one of the most influential actors in film history because of his pioneering work as a filmmaker and because of his impact on cultural movements such as socialism and feminism.
